Sig, captain of the Northwestern, and his brother put a dead decaying fish in Blake's (new captain) seat aboard the Maverick the night before everyone leaves port as a joke.
The captains of all the boats make a bet totaling $900.00 for the man who pulls the most with the first string the night before they leave port to start the season.
The Cornelia Marie was the first boat featured on the show to drop a pot for the King Crab season.
When the Coast Guard found the life boat from the sinking ship there was no one in the life boat. So the coast guard sank the life boat to prevent anyone else from search an empty boat.
Andy Hillstrand: Let the rodeo begin, my friend
Sig Hansen: A monkey can go out here and set pots but you gotta read what you see. You've got to understand what you're looking at.
Josh Harris: There's something about coming up here and risking your life. Sounds weird but it makes you feel alive.

In the book Time Bandit: Two Brother, the Bering Sea, and One of the World's Deadliest Jobs, Johnathan states that the bet wasn't about the money but what crew and captain where the better fishermen in that year.
Like in the first season, the Time Bandit was used as the chase boat, but this time unlike the first season they were credited.

This episode marks the coverage of three new boats: The Wizard captained by Keith Colburn The Eary Dawn captained by Allen Oakley The Farwest Leader captained by Greg Moncrief
Changes were make to the opening sequence, where a crabber is seen traveling over the open water, the boat has been changed to the Time Bandit it used to be the Retriever. Also, a brand new opening title sequence, that not only included the captains of the featured boats, but also their crews.
Blake Painter takes over the helm as captian of the Maverick. Rick Quashnick, the owner and previous captian, told Blake he would allow him to be captain last season, but Rick went back on the offer due to the ferocity of the winter storm that froze over a sizable portion of the Bering Sea as well as some misgivings from the crew concerning Blake becoming captain.
For yet unknown reasons, the fishing boat Ocean Challenger capsized. Of the four hands on board, only one was successfully rescued by the Coast Guard. At the conclusion of the episode, the fate of the other three hands remains unknown, but it appears they have succumbed to the freezing water and died.
