HBO (ended 2006)

Break out the alcohol and scream a few profanities in honor of Al Swearengen because the Deadwood movie is totally happening. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo confirmed to TV Line on Thursday that he's given Deadwood creator David Milch the green light for a film to wrap up the critically acclaimed series, which was brutally canceled after just three seasons in 2006.

“David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” Lombardo told the website. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be—and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen."

Rumors of a Deadwood film have been swirling since the series' cancellation nearly a decade ago, but in August 2015 HBO confirmed that the network was in "preliminary discussions" after actor Garret Dillahunt, who appeared as two different characters on the series, tweeted about what he referred to as "credible rumors." Of course, having the green light from HBO and finding time to write the film and reunite the cast for filming are two different things. Milch is currently working on another project, but according to Lombardo, “the understanding is that when he is done with that he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the Deadwood film."

Hey, we've waited this long, we can stand to wait a little longer, right?

Are you excited? Do you think it's a bunch of bullhonky or is this finally the real deal?

It's incredible that it has taken this long to do it but it needs to be done. How HBO allowed a series this good to end without a proper ending is inconceivable!

They could have at least ended season 3 with the battle that I thought for sure was coming. Such a big build up only to be let down with a series of cowardly acts.

Now if only we could get an actual ending to Carnivale...

Not so bad a problem... it means you'll get to re-enjoy the episodes as though it were a new show when they do their back to back run of episodes leading up to the new movie!

Since it's not even written yet and a million things can go wrong between now and actually making it, I'll save the f#cking canned peaches for when it really happens. Those wh@remongering c@cks#ckers should have given it a f#cking fourth season to properly wrap it up in the first place! :D

Is it too late to request a John From Cincinnati movie, book, or something to bring closure to the Yost's story as well? Was John an angel, devil, alien?

Great News! I've always hoped like pretty much any fan of the show has that we would get some kind of closure for the series, A movie sounds like a great idea. : )

I really really hope this happens. This is always in my top 3 shows when asked for recommendations. And seeing Timothy in a cowboy hat again wouldn't hurt either.

Brilliant news, indeed. Better pray Ian McShane stays on the wagon, what with all those lines he'll have to machine gun out again.
Since so many of them have regular series commitments now, that's going to be one hell of a pisser to fit them in. Maybe if they film it in typical show break periods they could smuggle them in and out.
However, a quick look on IMDB makes it look unrealistic. Dang'ed successful people!

Looking at the main casts' IMDB projects, including upcoming, I think the only ones who would have difficulty with ongoing commitments would be Kim DIckens (but Fear the Walking Dead doesn't have a standard filming schedule so she could fit in a movie), Powers Boothe (He's busy but is known to fit in movies/mini-series even while regularly appearing on TV), and Ian McShane (but with his Game of Thrones stint being on HBO - and who knows how long he'll be around - they could easily work around his filming schedule). It's TOTALLY doable!!!!!

I'll miss Ellsworth, but hopefully they can get everyone else back. It's gonna be pretty tough to get Tim back, though, now that he's staring in The Grinder: New Orleans and spending every weekend in Boise.

How fantastic! Watching Jessica Jones (with Deadwood's Calamity Jane, Robin Weigert) reminded me how much I miss the show all over again. They'd better not be f*cking with us. Hopefully most of the cast will be willing and able to come on. Do what you've gotta do, people.

fortunately everyone is still alive even if a bit aged. I think I watched the second season more recently than the third so I need a refresher on what characters are even still kicking around deadwood last we left.

so ...better late than never, right?! can we get timothy omundson a second role? maybe have him squint one eye and rub dirt on his face to make him unrecognizable.

actually omundson's hair and beard might already suffice as a disguise.

Going by last time he starred; the bigger question could be if his wife will allow it, as she reportedly hated the facial hair...

hey, he can play wild bill's ghost!

Premise: Steve the Drunk emerges from his vegetative state to find that months have passed, and his long-suffering caretaker, Samuel Fields, must bring him up to date on the happenings in Deadwood.
