Dearest Enemy is a special series, based on the successful broadway
musical of the same title, which originally aired in 1955. The story is
based around real-life events during the American Revolutionary War.
Acting as a military agent for General George Washington, Mary Lindley
Murrey (Cornelia Otis Skinner) detains British troops by serving them
wine and cake in her parlor, allowing a large band of military soldiers
to assemble for battle. While entertaining the enemy army, however,
Mary's daughter Jane loses sight of their military mission and falls in
love with British General Tyron's son Harry. Mary's niece Betsy Burke
(Anne Jeffreys) is also struggling with her duties because of an ongoing
relationship with British Captain Sir John Copeland (Robert Sterling),
which runs hot-and-cold.
