Ryuk informs Light that he's being followed and asks Light if he wants to make a trade for his own Shinigami eyes. But at what cost?
  • Just who is ahead of the other? They both seem to think two steps ahead of each other!

    "Great"
This episode wasn't as exciting as the first two, but still good. L is supreme in his reasoning and deductive ability, whereas Light is showing his true nature as a genius master of manipulation. I like how the plot is progressing so far. People are already beginning to fear Kira. More importantly, the end of the episode posed an interesting concept. What will Light's decision be regarding the Shinigami's eyes deal?

I don't think I would sacrifice half of my lifespan for anything, but I suppose it would depend on the offer and my desires. I suppose I'd rather live a shorter time, but live that time happy and having fun, rather than living a longer time in mediocrity. However, for Light, given what he is trying to accomplish, I suppose the offer would be very tempting!moreless

At the beginning of the episode we get to see what L thinks of Kira. L concludes that Kira must be a student because of the time that Kira seems to kill criminals. Because Light's father is part of the police force and investigating Kira, Light can easily go to his files and get information on what the L and the other investigators of Kira already know about him. That wasn't a big surprise for me because Light is clever however L then figures out what Kira is doing and so he investigates anyone that has any contact with people on the task force. This was also not a big surprise. L has solved many difficult cases in the past. Light gets a deal from Ryuk and also gets followed. It was a good episode overall.moreless
  • Does Light dare take Ryuk up on his offer?

Wow, this keeps getting better and better! I LOVE DEATH NOTE!!!!! Ahem. Light is going on a killing spree and murders like everyone that gets on the news for doing something negative. And people are starting to give him the nickname, The Kira. But now the police are getting involved, and L is after him. The police think The Kira is a student, so Light has to come up with stuff to throw them off track. Luckily, his father is part of the investigation, so he hacks into his computer and sees everything they know. So he begins to form this plan in which he think the police force will turn against L and vice versa. Then Ryuk tells him about the Shinigami's Eyes. He tells Light about the true purposes and the Shinigami, and that if Light is willing to trade half of his life, Ryuk will give him the ability to see a human's name and how much time they have left to live. Light considers this, as it would make the Death Note much easier to use. But on the other hand, he would lose half of his remaining life span.moreless
  • The chase heats up; each party must now follow their opening moves with something more spectacular.

    "Superb"
Now that Light knows he has a rival, human nature compels him to test out his opponent. This is when the battle started in the previous episode begins to take a real shape; the high-stakes battle between two geniuses.

Light, remaining in the bounds of his character, is not phased by Ryuk's announcement that the boy is being followed by someone other than the Shinigami. This only starts the first plot that is seen in the series, one of many to come. Each of these plots is successively more intricate than the last, but this relatively simple one is always the hook, line, and sinker that viewers get caught on.

And we can't forget the eye deal. With the Shinigami eyes, Light might be given an advantage over L. Whether or not he takes the deal determines what his real motives are: the betterment of society or the dictatorship of a frightened people.moreless
  • Ryuk tells Light about an amazing deal, and L and the police get a bit closer to the truth. Not the most eventful episode ever, but still good.

After examining the victims' times of death, the task force (or L, rather) has determined that Kira is possibly a student. Light finds out about this using his dad's computer, and immediately takes action to attempt to prove them wrong. Meanwhile, Ryuk tells Light that there is someone following him. Ryuk doesn't care one way or the other about what happens to Light, but the fact that Light's being followed makes HIM feel like he's being tailed too. Light needs to come up with a way to get rid of his stalker.
Ryuk takes the opportunity to mention the shinigami eyes deal. For half his remaining lifespan, Light will obtain the "shinigami eyes," and be able to see the name and lifespan of everyone he sees.
Will he do it? This episode wasn't as action packed as the first two, but it's still full of information and we learn a lot, mostly thanks to Ryuk who finally starts TALKING a bit. And the way I see it, Death Note is the sort of show where if it seems like nothing's happening, it's only building up the tension for something really big.moreless

    • Look Closely: When Ryuk looks at Light's name and life span using his shinigami eyes, the numbers seen for Light's life span are 9, 3, 31, 26, 3, 9. It is unknown what they convert to though, as Ryuk mentions, he has to convert them to human time.

    • Look Closely: On one of L's papers, Light's D.O.B. is shown as February 22, 1986.

    • Ryuk: First of all, I don't have anything against you. I actually think the notebook couldn't have been picked up by a better person. I'm here 'cuz I have to stick around until the Death Note is finished...or I see you die. Whichever comes first.

    • Light: (To Ryuk) You still don't understand human beings. In this world there are very few people who actually trust each other.

    • (Kira has begun killing a victim every hour on the hour.) L: It does appear less likely now that Kira is a student, but that's not the message he's sending by doing this. Ask yourselves, why every hour? And why are all these victims in prisons where they're sure to be discovered immediately? Why not other criminals like before? I believe Kira is telling us that not only can he kill from a distance, but he can also determine the time of death.

    • L: (After the report on the heart attack victims' times of death) That information is extremely relevant for us. It suggests that given the times of death, our suspect could very well be a student. (The police officers express surprise) Based on the fact that Kira is only killing criminals, I think it's safe to assume that he's driven by a very idealistic notion of justice. It's highly possible that he may even aspire to be some sort of god-like figure. We're dealing with an individual who has a very childish concept of right and wrong.

    • L: It is possible, judging from the estimated times of death, that the culprit is a student. That's not all. Since he's only killing criminals, we can deduce that the culprit is acting based on his/her own sense of justice. It's possible that he/she is trying to be something like a god. I have no choice but to call this extreme immature psychology.

    • Ryuk: The price of a Death God's eyes is... half of that human's remaining lifespan.
