  • An excellent starting, the start of Kira.

This episode starts the reign of Kira, Light finds the Death Note and is corrupted into Kira. Light learns and tests its power. Light feels he is doing good by killing off all the criminals. He wants a better world, one that is not rotten. You can watch the whole series, but its your opinion if Light is the good guy or the bad guy. Light is what you would call the perfect student he is smart, popular, athletic etc... Ryuk thinks humans are fun, their hatrid or kindness is amusing to shinigami, or just Ryuk. He is different from most shinigami. Ryuk puts his Death Note in the human world which starts this series off. How far will this duo go. Watch the series and find out.

This was a good way to start off Death Note. In the begining, you meet a smart 17 year old student named Light who doesn't like all the evil and mess in the world. One day, he stumbles across a booklet called Death Note and learns that the name of someone written in it will die. Light uses it to kill evil people and starts to grow into it, believing he's changing the world for the better. He meets shinigami named Ryuk who was the original owner of the Death Note and they stick together. Is Light doing a good think or a bad thing? Its your conclusion.
  • Just what on earth have you got yourself into, Light Yagami?

This episode accomplishes in exploring the drives and motivations of Ryuk and Light. The concept is highly appealing to me. It was interesting how it led into the episode title with both of them thinking that their world is rotten.

The thing that impressed me the most was the music. It matched the mood of each scene perfectly. I also loved the animation. It's so dark and gothic and reflects the darkness and twisted nature of the story perfectly. The little dabs of humour here and there is surprising considering the serious tone of everything.

This episode is pretty much a set-up episode done tastefully. The scene when Light starts mass killing criminals was superb. Some would say that the writing of names was over pimped with the sharp hand movements and the super shiny pen, but I loved that. It just showed how crazy Light is. He really does think of himself as a god. I've would have given it an eight out of ten if not for those last two minutes. That sealed it a nine. Ryuk's reaction at the end was priceless. I especially loved the mischievous smirk at the end, foreshadowing all the trouble that is yet to come.
  • Light Yagami first comes in contact with the Death Note.

This is the first episode of the Death Note anime series. I didn't put it down as pilot simply because the actual pilot of the series was a snippet of a graphic novel.

Yagami, bored with his life, finds the death note. At first, skeptical of the Death Notes power, tests the death note on a number of criminals, and watches the people he wrote in it die. At first, he's sick with himself for killing two people, but then convinces himself he had the right too, and took it upon himself to rid the world of evil. The Shinigami Ryuk makes his first appearance to Light as he is manically laughing at all the people he killed. I really like this episode, it definitely draws you in. Not the best episode, but a good one nonetheless. If you wanna check out the show, you MUST start here, no exceptions.
  • this episode was great because there he finds the deathnote and tells us what he will do with it but i think they should of added more to this great episode

i think this episode was a awsome episode because i gave it a 9.9 but there is a tiny mistake they could of waited to have light find the death note. if he had found the death note later i think that would be a great part of the series

but on the other hand this episode was the pilot episode so i can understand there reason why they didn't because if they didn't have him find the deathnote then people woudn't get this show at all and they propulary woudn't watch this awsome show so to recap i love this episode one of the best
  • The very first episode of Death Note, introducing our basic theme of Light's dream for a utopia.

Well, honestly, it left me confused. It wasn't exactly a BAD episode, but... It introduces the key themes of the Death Note series, and one or two main characters. This is essentially a set-the-stage episode that I think the series could do without, if not solely for the fact that it didn't leave me hooked.

The ending seemed to be just that- an ending. There was no plot to it, from what I could tell, there were two characters- one of them not even human- and there seemed no issues or obstacles. Honestly, I didn't plan to watch the second episode. I'll just state, however- thank god I did. THAT episode was the true start of the series, and deserves all the fame. THAT is the episode that got me hooked for life.

Anyway, I'll just say to anyone planning to watch the show, be sure to wait it out through episode 2. It is worth it!

I think that this episode was probably the best starter episodes of all the other animes. It seriously makes you want to run right to the screen and look to see what happens next. It is nicely explained as you go along. It is a very high quality show. I could watch this beggining episode 100 times and not get bored. It is an amazing anime.

Even though it is a little short,it packs a-lot of info. that you actually get. Some beggining episodes of anime are good. But this one,its really different. Its"unique". Good series,no boring episodes. There are a-lot of things you could list about this anime. But i have 5 favorite things about it that i love.

1.The quality of the anime is great,no bad graphics.

2.all episodes make you wanna move to the edge of your seat.

    3.Easily explained

A really great first episode. Light Yagami finds a Death Note fall from the sky during school, and discovers it has the power to kill whoever's name is written in it. Light decides to use this power to better the world by killing criminals that he judges to be evil. He plans to be the god of this new world. He meets the shinigami Ryuk who owns the Death Note. He tells him the rules and secrets about it. This was a great setup for the rest of the series, and can seriously keep you guessing what will happen in future episodes.

A break through in anime, even haters have to agree on. Tell me, how many anime shows trail behind the Antagonist and the Protagonist? I love this anime because it doesn't make L seem all godly and perfect, nor do the same traditional rules apply to Light. This anime has it's up and downs, and is very close to the manga, compared to other animes. This is a welcome change, a breath of fresh air, with each twist theirs a bend, in each bend of the plot there is a resolution. In each resolution is someone waiting, laughing, already knowing what's to come.

This story is morbid, and you can tell that the writer(s) had done their homework to atleast *Try* and make the story believable.

A must for any anime fan.

Ps. Say Light's last name backwards.

    Yeeeeaaahh.

This episode could have been any better. It really captures the spirit of the manga an an exciting way.The episode begins with a brilliant opening song by a japenese rock band whom i had never heard of.The music was great to listen to and shouldn't have been replaced by that crap heavy metal that came into season 2.The voice acting in the episode couldn't have been any better. As i don't really watch any other anime shows i didn't recognise any of them but they were still fantastic.

The episode kept faithfully to the source and luckily stayed that way through the show.

pretty good first episode. i dont really like light, i mean half the time he seems nice and good but then when he was alone he got kinda creepy. and i dont like the whole god of the world thing. no one person should be the ruler of the world expecally with a power like that. of course is killing off the people he killed off a bad thing? well no i dont think its bad, he is right some people do deserve to die, but then we are back to the whole why should only one person decide whats good and bad. it also seemed as if he wanted to be god of the world a bit too much. the death god was right after he kills all the criminals light will be the only evil left but he seems unaware of that fact.

i read the manga before i started to watch this and i am going to try hard to pretend that i havent so the way i feel about the people in the comic does not influnce my review here... though i will compare the differences from time to time
  • Light Yagami, a bored high school student, finds a notebook and concludes that if he uses that DEATH NOTE titled book, he can get rid of the evil of the world by killing criminals.

This was a good pilot episode. It basically explains how Light Yagami obtained the Death Note notebook, what he will do with it and why. The episode was good because it showed how Light reacted when he saw that the Death Note was real. It is also great that we get to hear his thoughts and opinions on what the situation is. He used the Death Note twice in this episode to test the Death Note. He wasn't careless and it is shown that he is also an intelligent person. The episode overall was good and it was also a good beginning for a show.

I have never been a fan of anime, and I have stayed away from it as long as I can remember. I mean, everyone watched Dragon Ball and Pokemon as kids. But that's in the past.

But lately, I've had to urge to try something new. And I decided to watch some Anime pilots, a watched some, and although I liked all of them. None of them were 'good' enough. I wanted something better, and then I watched 'Death Note'.

Omfg. That's what I said after the intro, it looked amazing. Dark, and twisted. Totally me. And then I actually watched the episode, and fell inlove with it.

The main character is very intruding, he thinks he's making the world a better place by killing people he sees as unworthy to live. And the Devilish dude knows that the boy himself, is just obsessed with this new power.

The death scenes were very impressive, and the animation was downright perfect.

It's an absolute keeper, the animation works, the story works, and the writing is superb. I love it, a morbid and utterly brilliantly well done Pilot. I hope the rest is just as excellent.

  • Light is hot, but he scares me.....

Okay, so this is the first episode that I've watched, thanks to my good friend DarkNinja1994. It's really good except for the fact that Light's obsession for killing theses people scares me. Light and this shinigami (death god) named Ryuk have something in common, they're bored. Ryuk finds his world boring and wanted to have some fun, so he decided to drop his Death Note in the human world. Light just happens to see it fall and pick it up. The Death Note is a notebook, and if a humans name is written in, they will die. There are specific rules to it though, and Ryuk courteously translated them into English (what he calls the most dominant language int the world). Light at first considers it a joke, but as he tests it, he sees that it is truly real. He plans to use it to rid the world of criminals, and create a new world in which he rules over. Now you people understand why he scares me. He gets so much enjoyment out of killing people! Well, later on Ryuk comes to Earth and explains all that is going on. He also seems to get enjoyment out of others death. Though the series is good, those people are freaks!

The first episode of Death Notes starts with Light Yagami is a high school genius bored with life in general. Ryuk, a shinigami, is also bored, so he decides to drop his Death Note (a notebook shinigami use to kill humans) on Earth. After which, Light finds this mysterious book and decides to rid the world of all wicked people and rule a utopia as a god. I'm very used to shows with action, but this show is still pretty awesome. Lights finds the Death Note and nows calls himself Kira, which means killer. Awesome in the name of Kira. Yes...
  • Light's a freak.....

Man, I swear! Light has to be the biggest freak ever! Don't get me wrong, I love this show and all, but sometimes Light's obsession scares me. I mean, who else laughs maniacally like that while their willingly killing people?!? Answer: only Light Yagami. I had to watch this on youtube because I got into the series a few weeks ago. Now I'm watching episode 2. Anyway, Light Yagami is your average high school genius. Except for the fact that he's bored with his life. Until he stumbles across this notebook he finds in the school called "The Death Note." He reads the rules and thinks it's just a stupid chain letter thing that some kids did. But he takes it home anyway. The rules in it say that you must write a person's name inside anad imagine their face in your mind. He's watching the news and sees a guy hloding up a daycare and writes the guy's name in. Then the Death Note says that within 40 seconds, whoever's name is written shall die of a heart attack if the cause is not specified. 40 seconds go by, and Light thinks that nothing has happened, so he starts to turn off the TV when the hostages run outside sscreaming something about the villian being dead. Light freaks, and decides to test it again. He's looking at mangas in the book store, when he sees some drunken idiots trying to rape this girl. He writes their names down (he heard one of the guys introduce himself to the girl) and the guy gets hit by a truck when he chases her. So now Light knows it's the real deal and is visited by a Shinigami named Ryuk. And some other stuff happens, and at the end Light writes criminal's names at lighting speed, laughing like a cray person all the while.

A lot of people started saying, "Death Note's cool" and it's a very nice show. So I went to Gofish to take the popular show a spin. I thought that was the second ebst spin i've had, it even beats Digimon. But it doesn't beat 24 thoguh.

That was so nice. I'm captivated. It's forcing me to watch more and more Death Note. Althoguh it's kind of violent, it's awesome, and deserves the perfect score.

Happy coincidence taht someone died 40 seconds after he wrote teh name of a man holding a school hostage. Some scenes were really cool, great and awesome you can't stop watching. Just like 24 material. Good start to a gonna-be-good-sereies-IMHO anyway.

Death Note was not airing in America when I first found out about it. I read it in a Shonen Jump October 2005 Issue. I thoguht that teh show would be just as good. It turns out, it wasn't great. It was really super awesome. I love Death Note. Light Yagami decides to use the death note to kill the worlds most hated criminals and decides to become the god of his world. I also like Ryuk's attitude and how he does things. He drops teh Death Note because he was bored and wanted to see what would happen. This is going to be a really good anime.

Light Yagami is just your typical Japanese workaholic high school student who is consistently placed at the top of his class. When he discovers the supernatural Death Note, we discover that great intellects are often paired with great God complexes.

Light decides to kill all the world's criminals and become the new world's God. This doesn't make any sense to me either. But hey. It makes for one great story.

Not a whole lot happens in this episode except for Light discovering the death note, testing it out, and meeting the hilarious Ryuk for the first time, but it gives us a great insight into both Light and Ryuk as individual characters: Light is a bored criminal mastermind in the making, and Ryuk is the neutral bystander who's in it for the kicks.
  • The pilot of Death Note proves to be an intriguing look into the mind of a sociopath.

    9.0
    "Superb"
I honestly don't remember an anime pilot grabbing me like this one did. By the end of this episode, I was very intrigued by the many different facets of this show that are already coming to light in the first episode of the show. A lot in this episode was great, from the dark music to the animation scheme to the interesting storyline.

Light Yagami is probably the most interesting protagonist of a series I've ever seen (if he can be called the protagonist). Which is exactly why this show has grabbed me. Light is very ambiguous. The audience can't really tell if he's good or bad, right or wrong, righteous or evil. I love three-dimensional characters that are ambiguous. I'll use the example of Charles Logan from 24. I love that character because he's so relatable, he's so understandable, and he's very ambiguous. Is he good or bad? It's not a black and white question with Logan, and it's not a black and white question with Light.

Onto some of the quality of the show. I particularly like the music in this series. It uses a lot of choral sounds (which I love), and it has a very dark, intense feel. The opening piece with Ryuk in the Shinigami realm was absolutely amazing, powered by the men's chorus. It created this wonderfully dark sound that perfectly emulated the world that was shown in the scene. The other piece of outstanding music was the piece when we saw Light killing all of those people. It was very intense, very fast-paced, very driven by the choir. It created a pulse in the scene that helped to magnify the intensity of the scene wonderfully.

I like the animation scheme for this series. It's very Withc Hunter Robin, but it's even darker than that. This show seems more down to earth and realstic than Witch Hunter Robin. The animation of Death Note shows this off. The animation scheme contained a lot of elements of realism and darkness, two things that seem to be very prevalent in this show. There were not any specific standout things about animation in this episode. I just wanted to comment on the scheme since it's the pilot episode.

I also liked the dub voice actors in this episode. I thought Brad Swaile was particularly good as Light Yagami. He portrayed a bored student at the beginning of the episode wishing he could do something to make the world better. He finds that thing when he finds the Death Note. Swaile does a great job at portraying the curiousity and fear of Yagami. Then, as he gets used to using the Death Note, he becomes more sinister in his portrayal. While I wish that he would remain normal sounding to keep the sense of ambiguity around the character, this sinisterness does lend itself to Light clearly being a sociopath.

Overall, this first opening episode of Death Note was great. It has a great protagonist (if that is the right word), wonderful music, a dark animation scheme, and an intriguing storyline. I look forward to the rest of this series. Hopefully it will be even better than the opening episode.

Light Yagami, a teenaged genius, walks home from school to find a notebook on the ground with the words "Death Note" on the cover. He takes it home, reads the instuctions, and decides to give it a try. When a name is wriiten down, less than a minute later, the person dies of a heart attack. If the cause of death is wriiten down, then they die the way it is written. He becomes a little crazy with power as he uses the book to kill famous criminals. When Ryuk, a Shinigami(Death God) visits Light, He tells him all about the Death Note. Light tells Ryuk that he will build a utopia with just the good, hard working people in it.

Very good start and awesome theme. I think its very unique you would have never thought somebody would create a series which shows a kid finding a notebook and having the rite to kill people by writing thier name on it. Its very wierd to start because we first see Yagami question the book as if something like that could posibly ever work. One thing I noticed about yagami was his confidents and how calm he reacted towerds the situation, this will later help him overcome hard situations. One thing that goes to mind is why did it had to be Yagami first he has the best grades in his school(all japan also)and he is also quite popular which we will later find out. If is this good in his life why is he taking such a risk!

Let's get this straight. After the annoucement on this series coming Adult Swim, I was totally excited about this annoucement. So I counted the weeks, days, hours, and finally minutes until its premire. Was it good? YES!

I enjoyed the voices of Light and Ryuk, each one matched them correctly in my view. Now I can't wait until next week's episode to see how L and the rest of the cast sounds.

The animation was amazingly clean and polished, it was great and it reminded me of Monster's animation.

Most of the scenes in the episode followed correctly the first chapter of the book, but some of them I didn't like. They cut out L's appearance in it and they added to the biker scene where now they attempt to assult the woman. These were the only problems with the episode.

All in all, I picked out another good show to watch and now I'll never forget it!

Yagami Light is a bored high school student. One day he finds a note written in it, that If you write a person's name in the note he/she dies after exactly 40 seconds, it has to be some one you know his face also. If you don't write any details about the way they die, they die of a heart attack. Light tries the Note book on a criminal he saw in the news and after 40 seconds the man dies. Light takes interest in the note book and uses it on other criminals every day in order to cleanse this world and become in his word the new world's God! This note was owned by a Ryuk and he dropped the note intentionally because he also was bored. This episode is amazing, well written and plotted and as you get deeper in the series thing get better and a bit scary!

Upon inspecting it, he sees it is no ordinary notebook; it reads "Death Note," and on the very first page are written the rules: the human whose name is written in this note will die. Light, a brilliant high school student who's at the top of his class, at first brushes it off as a prank, but can't resist taking it home anyway. Thus do his misadventures begin.

After discovering the Death Note does in fact work, and that it belongs to the death god Ryuk who dropped it, Light lets the power go to his head and, after a brief battle with his inner demons, decides to use it "for good" and kill all the world's criminals. Following that, he will rule the new perfect world as a god. (I didn't know humans could live forever, but I guess I've been wrong before.)

Altogether, it was a very well done first episode; from the very beginning we see that Light and Ryuk are each bored with their respective worlds and their problems, and upon meeting use the Death Note to make their lives much more interesting.

The main character, Light, is in school when a person from another world drops his death note. Light picks it up and he reads the instructions. He doesn't believe that the book works at first, of course, but as he uses it more and more, he uses it to kill the bad people in the world. Later, when Light is in his room, Ryuk, the person who dropped the note appears and starts to talk to Light about the rules of the note. After that, Light writes lots of names in the note and then he starts to believe he can rule a world where there are no bad people... i agree with tvmania619

This anime was long-anticipated by the fans of the manga, and I must say that I'm the farthest I can be from disappointment.

The episode starts out with the normal materials of any anime: a "hero" with a seemingly normal life that soon gets turned upside down by some unseen force. It moves rather slowly, as Light must think everything out one step at a time, but towards the end, when Light becomes attached to the idea of the Death Note, its power, and what he can become with said Note, things already begin to pick up pace, promising a thrilling second episode.

It is uncommon to see such a drastic change in a character in the first episode--or rather, feel like one knows the character enough to see that change occur. From this, I can conclude that there will be vast characterization throughout the show. The intellectual viewer will be entertained and puzzled the whole way through, and the not-so-intellectual viewer can follow easily enough (with the added bonus of not being in on the twists and turns before they happen--definitely worth anyone's half-hour watch.
