Deepwater Black

Show Summary

In the future, a deadly and unstoppable virus has wiped out virtually all of mankind. In a last-ditch effort to save humanity, the ship Deepwater is launched, stocked with clones in cryogenic freeze who do not carry the virus. Its mission: stay in space until the virus has run its course, then return to Earth so the people on board can repopulate it. However, the plan is thrown off course when the ship's crew is awakened to deal with an unexpected danger. The six youngsters avert disaster, but then are forced to deal with the implications of who and what they are, and how they're going to complete their mission of bringing the Deepwater safely back to Earth and saving humanity from extinction. The series was based on a trilogy of books written by New Zealand author Ken Catran. Deepwater Black, also called Mission Genesis, was The Sci Fi Channel's first original series. Although it lasted only one season, it paved the way for other Sci Fi originals such as First Wave, Lexx, Invisible Man, Farscape, The Chronicle and more. The series aired in Canada as Deepwater Black on YTV.moreless

  • This was a pretty good television series.

This was a pretty good television series. As is normal with good television shows, this one did not last long enough. This is a show that I would suggest watching if you get the chance. Check the bargain bins at Wal-Mart, the online movies sites (Amazon.com and such) and all of the cable channels that run old shows. Nick at Nite and TV Land are great for theses kind of shows. They will even do a week long spot for shows that only had 6 or so episodes. Then you have your super stations. They run a bunch of old shows too. All in all a pretty good show that did not get a good enough chance. Sometimes it is a simple as the show it is up against. Look at Law & Order. It is one of the longest running shows on TV. They moved it to go up against Lost. After about 2 weeks of getting pounded in the ratings it was moved back to it's original time slot. Shows like this should be given more of an opportunity.moreless
  • Good attempt at ' teenage ' science fiction

    7.9
Deepwater Black episodes were about half an hour long, and in that time scale the writers had to produce a show that produced a crisis, built to a climax and then provided a suitable resolution - not an easy task.

But more often than not I felt they succeeded.

All the Deepwater crew were well fleshed out characters - my favourite was Bren - and it was good to see that there was conflict between them. Their situation was pressurised to say the least - they were strangers to themselves let alone each other and on top of that they find out they have to go back and save the earth!

This was definitely a decent show and a good attempt at producing a science fiction series for teenagers.moreless
