Degrassi is a very popular show, not only in Canada, but in the states as well. It deals with real teen issues and the show tries to show possible solutions/outcomes from them. Like teen pregnancy, etc.

Not just states other countrys, I'm in Australia and we 'sometimes' have it here, and I've also heard that it once aired in Germany with subtitles.

Why are you in this forum?

Okay, Degrassi is a series of cheesy shows beginning in 1978 with the short film Ida Makes a Movie. Basically, Linda Schuyler was a schoolteacher who didn't have all the educational materials she wanted, so she and Kit Hood formed Playing With Time, Inc. Over the next seven years, people were added and deleted from the cast, and eventually the kids left became part of the cast of Degrassi Junior High, which takes place in a separate universe. There's a character for everyone: Queen bee Stephanie, often-misinformed Caitlin, prankster Joey, shiny happy couple Simon and Alexa, token teen mom Spike, messed-up chicks Liz and Kathleen, cautious Snake, nerd-turned-stoner Yick, bad influence Luke, the twins Heather and Erica (who do twin stuff, AND have moral disagreements), etc.

Degrassi Junior High became Degrassi High after the third season. Long story short, somehow the grade 8s all stayed at Degrassi for grade 9, then the school burned down so the grade 7s, grade 8s, and grade 9s all went to a high school (also named Degrassi). While Degrassi Junior High talked about puberty, drugs, and child abuse (with pregnancy seeping in), Degrassi High talked about abortion, suicide, and AIDS.

Then there was School's Out!, a sex comedy at the end of the series focusing on a few main characters (Joey, Caitlin, Tessa, and to a lesser extent Wheels, Snake, and Lucy), though most of the characters make at least a cameo.

Most recently they started a spinoff, Degrassi: The Next Generation. Three girls on Degrassi got pregnant: Spike, Erica, and Tessa. Erica and Tessa got abortions. So what about Spike and her daughter Emma? Emma gets to re-live history. (As an example, the finale for the first season has Sean switching placebos for ecstasy so JT and Toby don't get in trouble. Fine, EXCEPT Joey already did the same thing.) It's not quite as cheesy, but it has its moments.

I found Ida makes a movie quite painful to watch. But I love Junior High.
