  • Spike thinks she's pregnant.

"It's Late!" is one of my favourite Degrassi JUnior High episodes from season 1. I love this episode because teen pregnancy was happening in the 80's and this show had the guts to do a storyline about it. I love how Spike becomes a main character in this episode. I love how she finds out she's pregnant, and I love how her mom supported her. The Yick and Arthur plot was very entertaining. I love how Arthur was trying to teach Yick how to talk to girls, but it always turned out bad for Yick. Melanie and Yick's first date was cute. I give this episode a 10/10.

  • Spike and Shane are kissing at Lucy's party and go into a bedroom to get away from Joey, and end up having sex. Spike later finds out she's pregnant. Yick tries to impress Melanie, and it backfires until he actually asks her out.

Every high school show needs a pregnant girl, and here is Spike. Of course compared to Stephanie in Best Laid Plans, it would appear that those who talk of it don't, and those who don't talk of it do. But Stephanie's reaction isn't shown. Otherwise we only see Spike and Shane together in The Big Dance sitting on the steps, briefly, but only here do we see them as boyfriend and girlfriend. And things have gotten too fast. But it's nice to see Shane trying to take his responsibility for it; going with her to the clinic, and holding her hand as she tells her mom. Alexa saying how much she loves babies, it's kinda sick; no doubt she loves babies, and then in the series premiere of DTNG she is very happily pregnant with #3. But when has she ever offered to skip a dance to babysit Emma so Spike can go? Here we learn that Voula just got a niece or nephew, from her older sister. Makes me wonder, did her father regulate her that much too, to make her rebel, sneak around and get pregnant? Or was she a lot older, and married? No mention of her in The Big Dance. The part with Yick trying to impress Melanie, that's hilarious.
  • The hazards of teen sex.

Because Degrassi deals with teen issues, no teen issue is as relevant than sex. not only does this deal with sex, it tackles some of the myths about teen sex and pregnancy. The most commom is that girls can't get pregnant the first time they have sex. A third of girls get pregnant the first time and that's what girls need to know.
