"Kiss Me, Steph" is an excellent Degrassi Junior High episode. This show was so edgy for an 80's show. It was also a lot more realistic than other shows. This show was instantly edgy because the main character Stephanie decides to dress more "sexier" to win the school election. It was interesting watching how Steph treated Voula, but Voula's character just gets annoying as the series goes on. In this episode, Arthur and Yick get bullied by Joey, which is very interesting because Joey is not a bully. I give this episode a 10/10.moreless
  • Today's Focus: Popularity and Peer Pressure

    9.6
    "Superb"
This pilot episode is a wonderful start to Degrassi Junior High and the entire Degrassi series. It's clear from the very beginning that Grade 8 Stephanie Kaye has definitely changed. Not only has she changed her last name, but she also has apparently changed her look to garner more attention for herself. Suddenly, she's decided to run for class president even though she has no clue what a school president even does. She is convinced that she can win because of her popularity and new found look, especially when the boys say they'll vote for her if she'll give them a kiss.

This episode greatly exposes two major aspects of junior high ,and even high school, almost every child must deal with, being popular and peer pressure. The episode effectively portrays the fact that people can and will do almost anything to be popular with their fellow students. When Stephanie agrees to allow the boys to get a kiss from her if they'll vote for her she is also giving in to another part of the reality of junior high, peer pressure. This is especially evident when she is convinced by Joey Jeremiah that he could assure her of a win if she'd dump her other campaign manager, Voula her best friend of many years. Stephanie realizes that if all the boys vote for her, she won't need the girls votes at all and then chooses Joey over friend Voula. Stephanie basically allows the guys to say anything about her as long as they'll vote for her. Eventually, Stephanie wins the election because of her peer pressure from all the guys and her need to be popular amongst her peers, but loses friend Voula. The fact that she asks Voula to help her be president and write her speech for the PTA meeting was just appalling. Luckily, Voula says no and Stephanie must realize just how to be president on her own.

Also, this episode also perfectly introduces the characters of Stephanie and her younger brother , Arthur whom she doesn't even want to associate with. Poor Arthur is forced to endure the wrath of Joey Jeremiah all throughout this episode., but his making of a new friend Yick was a highlight of the episode. The one redeeming moment for Stephanie is when she convinced Joey to actually stop torturing Arthur, although never revealing that he was actually her brother. This show also perfectly introduced the character of Joey Jeremiah completely. It's evident from the first moments his character appeared on screen, why so many consider him one of the best characters from this whole entire early Degrassi series.

Basically, this show perfectly portrayed the life of junior high students and did it in a fashion that didn't make everyone look stupid or smart. Each character was shown to be basically like anyone you could have went to junior high school with yourself. The writing of this episode clearly expressed the feelings and reactions any teenager entering junior high or already attending there would feel. The directing wasn't the greatest in the world, but it was the mid 1980's so it wasn't that bad. All in all a perfect beginning to a wonderful series that should be seen by old and young alike.

    Final Grade: A

  • A beggining to what seems to be an intriguing show.

I heard that the Degrassi series is a show worth watching, escpecially for teenagers, so I decided to watch an episode. I think that this first episode hit two major points on teen life : popularity, and peer pressure. Stephanie changed her last name and started dressing like a certain word that starts with an s and ends with a t... just to win an election. She liked the attention she got from the guys, so keeps going at it. However, she lost respect from her fellow female classmates as well as her best friend Voula. In the end, after basically disrespecting herself, then making a lot of empty promises, she wins the election. I actually felt sorry for her when Voula dumped her, but she deserved it. Good first episode, can't wait to see the next episode.moreless

Stephanie begins her first day of the eighth grade by ignoring her younger brother, Arthur, who is a year younger than her. Stephanie decides to run for student council president for the school year. After allowing a good portion of the school's male population to kiss her, she wins the election. She loses her best friend, Voula, by neglecting to thank her during her speech. Meanwhile, Arthur runs into Joey, who seems friendly at first, but locks Arthur in the janitor's closet. Arthur and classmate Yick team up to avoid being bullied by Joey. the very first episode of DJH is also one of the all time best. stephanie kaye has to be one of coolest characters ever on a tv show. the pilot episode is really well written, and also very funny.moreless

This is a classic beginning episode. Stephanie is now in grade 8 and wants to be popular. She runs for student president, and changes her image to make her look sexy. She changes into sexy clothes in the bathroom every morning, as well as high hair and lots of makeup. Obviously the year before, she was dressing more like Voula, but now decides she wants a \"new image\". Voula is good to tell her she liked the old image. It shows just how far Stephanie will go for this popularity. To let the boys kiss her, and go along with promises, and yet use good speeches with just the right words that Voula helps her with. I don\'t know how many siblings disown each other in school, but Stephanie\'s doing so with Arthur is most interesting, especially since their parents are divorced and she uses her mother\'s maiden name too. Also most interesting that once Joey starts torturing Arthur she stands up to him then. Sibling relationships are so complex. Arthur and Yick meeting over Joey\'s cruel pranks was good too.moreless
