"Smokescreen" is a good Degrassi Junior High episode. I love how Rick joins the Anti-Pollution Committee to impress Caitlin. And I love how he actually wants to do something about the pollution. The one thing I didn't like about this episode was everyone making a big deal about Rick. I love the subplot with Yick thinking his family is boring. I love how Arthur convinces that him that his family background is very interesting. I give this episode a 8/10.moreless
  • Rick joins the Environmental Action Committee to get Caitlin to like him. But trying to get Kathleen to like him is a little harder. Yick feels insecure about his family presentation and tries to make something up, which backfired.moreless

A good message in it; that people aren't always what they seem. Rick initially joins the committee because of Caitlin, and ends up making a difference in it. He may not be that good a student, but he is creative. In making a more catchy announcement, that gets a lot of people signing the petition. And actually going to the factory in question, rather than just talking about what they're doing that's bad. Though I can understand Kathleen wanting him out because he smoked; that doesn't do much good for the environment. But otherwise, Kathleen is shown as a stubborn control freak; going with a long name and not even listening to other ideas. The sub-plot is interesting, and creates awareness about immigrant students. That everyone has a story to tell, even though they may not have anything to show for it. And all the ways junior-highs try to cover stuff up; both with Arthur and Yick.moreless

    • Rick: Tell me how to get Caitlin to like me. Shane: You could join that committee she's on. Rick: The Environmental Action Committee? Shane: INaction is more like it. But at least you'd have something to talk about.

    • Yick: It's been in my family for thousands of years. I forgot we had it. Arthur: What dynasty is it? Yick: Uh... Ming! Or Man-chu... maybe both. Arthur: And your parents let you bring it to school? Yick: Well... they don't really know.

    • Caitlin: What about the petition? Kathleen: What about the petition? Susie: We've got almost 200 signatures, we should take it to the factory. Kathleen: No one's going to listen to a bunch of kids. Rick: How would you know brain box!

    • Caitlin: They said you were stupid, I guess they were right. Rick: Catlin. Catlin: And after I tried to help you in everything. Rick: Help me, what am I some project?

    • Rick: Why don't we call the newspaper? Tell them how a bunch of junior high students tried to see the President of the company. Papers love stories like that; I bet the President would see us after that. Caitlin: (kisses him on the cheek) Rick, you're brilliant! Rick: Shhh... I have a reputation.
