  • Rick tries to impress Caitlin.

"Smokescreen" is a good Degrassi Junior High episode. I love how Rick joins the Anti-Pollution Committee to impress Caitlin. And I love how he actually wants to do something about the pollution. The one thing I didn't like about this episode was everyone making a big deal about Rick. I love the subplot with Yick thinking his family is boring. I love how Arthur convinces that him that his family background is very interesting. I give this episode a 8/10.

  • Rick joins the Environmental Action Committee to get Caitlin to like him. But trying to get Kathleen to like him is a little harder. Yick feels insecure about his family presentation and tries to make something up, which backfired.

A good message in it; that people aren't always what they seem. Rick initially joins the committee because of Caitlin, and ends up making a difference in it. He may not be that good a student, but he is creative. In making a more catchy announcement, that gets a lot of people signing the petition. And actually going to the factory in question, rather than just talking about what they're doing that's bad. Though I can understand Kathleen wanting him out because he smoked; that doesn't do much good for the environment. But otherwise, Kathleen is shown as a stubborn control freak; going with a long name and not even listening to other ideas. The sub-plot is interesting, and creates awareness about immigrant students. That everyone has a story to tell, even though they may not have anything to show for it. And all the ways junior-highs try to cover stuff up; both with Arthur and Yick.
