"Great"
Tom: "You're my rock Lynette; you know that, don't you?"
Lynette: "Tom, you're rock is trying to get fingerprints off a weapon. Do you mind?"
Entering the last episode before we get more in 2009, this is a fairly standard edition of the hit series but don't worry because there are some advancement made that should be suitably interesting in the upcoming weeks.
First of all, remember Lila Dash and her daughter Paige from "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow"? Well it turns out that they're related to Dave and while that will serve as a shock to virtually no-one, credit to this episode for just putting us out of our misery regarding that event from the premiere episode.
It had been widely suspected that Lila and Paige's deaths would somehow surface into the series mystery and I think it's not much of a stretch to guess that Dave is the devastated husband. It certainly explains why he's so hell bent on setting Mike up for a fall but whether or not he'll actually succeed is another thing.
Mike has had a history of being knocked down, shot, torched and has pretty much survived so Dave would have to do something truly innovative in order to get his revenge. Because of this, not only should Mike watch his back, but I have a feeling that Susan, Katherine and MJ aren't particularly safe either.
However as genius as Dave might have thought he was, he did make one fatal mistake – telling the cops about Porter torching Warren's club. So far it hasn't come to bite him in the ass due to Lynette being unaware that it was Dave who dropped Porter in it but Lynette now has seen another side.
Catching him talking to himself is definitely something that will play out later in the season and as someone who likes Lynette, it would interesting to see her play an active role in Dave's saga. After all, Lynette is not a woman that Dave really wants to get on the wrong side of.
As for the talking to himself bit, well it was just Lila and Paige but it did run for a few too many scenes but given his devotion to avenging their deaths, I now feel that Edie is little more than a beard for Dave, which is a shame because a few weeks ago, it did look like he actually cared about her.
Speaking of which, in ten episodes Edie has had the least amount to do and given that she's been on the show since the first episode, it's a shame the writers don't feel that she could do with a few more scenes. Granted she's put to good use during a certain moment with Susan and Katherine but other than that, she's surplus to requirements yet again.
Speaking of Mike however, now here is a man who doesn't know how to talk to his kid. MJ has now gotten into the phase of thinking that him and Susan are going to eventually get back together and because of it, Katherine is his least favourite person and MJ has plenty of ways of making sure she gets the point.
First there's hurling ice cream at her but I think the most inventive one was his use of a bowling ball. Edie made a good point that because Susan gave off hostile vibes whenever Katherine was around, MJ would take that as a hint to act out against her and to be fair, Susan could've easily have picked up on that without Edie having to spell it out for her.
The funny part was that even when Susan decided to gatecrash Mike and Katherine's bowling game and make nice with Katherine for MJ's sake, Katherine still had to get a bowling ball on her foot, all because the lad really does believe that his parents will get back together. It's no surprise then when it's revealed when Susan let that one slip.
Part of her reason had been to console MJ but it was obvious that she was hopeful for a reconciliation given what we saw in "Mirror, Mirror". The funny part was that Mike seemed more than adamant that he never considered taking Susan, given that we've seen him pine for her in the past.
As for Mike and Katherine, their relationship is hardly the most exciting thing the show has ever done but I don't see why they can't last and just because Jackson's AWOL, it doesn't mean I want to see Susan sticking her oar into her ex-husband's love life too.
When it comes to interfering though, there's no-one better than Bree. Because it was Alex who relieved Orson's snoring, she immediately took a liking to him, so it was probably good that his status as a doctor also fuelled her interest when she discovered that Alex has been living with Andrew for the last six months.
You got to admit Andrew for keeping that one under his hat for so long. If this was Brothers And Sisters, barely six seconds would've passed before the entire Walker clan and Holly would know a secret like that. Needless to say, Andrew's reasons for being so secretive were down to Bree's previous lack of interest in her son's sex life.
Now that she is interested, Alex soon finds himself the centre of attention of a family dinner which for the third time this season includes outsiders. This time around, it's Bob and Lee and their contribution, while not exactly earth shattering does reveal a bit more about Alex's own past.
It seems that like mother, like son, Andrew hooked up with a doctor with an interesting sex related history. Unlike Rex, Alex did a bit of porn to pay his tuition rather than explore the wonders of S&M. It's enough to raise childish smirks from Bob and Lee but more importantly, it furthers Bree's interest in Andrew's history.
The fact that Andrew is engaged to Alex played another part into things. After all, Bree didn't want to have a man with a shady past in her family despite the fact that she married two and gave birth to one of them. The best part is that Andrew was already aware of Alex's past and given that Andrew dabbled in prostitution, he was exactly in an immediate rush to judge his soon to be husband.
The other great of this episode is that it showed the evolution of Andrew and Bree's relationship. Gone are the days where it was Andrew's burning desire to destroy Bree as well as the ones where the idea of her son being gay repulsed. It's just a pity that we've had to go through almost two seasons of Andrew having nothing to do just to get a story like this. Hopefully his and Alex's wedding will actually get better treatment that Bob and Lee's did.
Speaking of treatment, Lynette is getting a little out of depth in handling things with Porter. Her attempts of reconnecting the family goes to crap when Porter's arrested and it's later revealed that he stole Edie's gun to scare Warren. Tom's misunderstanding when he thinks Porter was sleeping with Edie however just made the former look like a bigger idiot than usual.
While it's nice to see Bob actually act as a lawyer for a change, I just can't see him successfully getting Porter off. After all, he has no real alibi, stole a weapon and because Warren threatened to kill him, he decided to skip town during the worst possible moment. Oh and having Preston pretend to be him in court can only end in tears.
Still this episode did deliver on what kind of lengths Lynette would go to protect her own son. She did after all pay Anne to skip town and here she cleans Edie's gun before sneaking it back into her own house (that was when she heard Dave talking to himself) and she was willing to sacrifice Preston as well but that was somewhat less noble of her.
Elsewhere we had a more happier plot for the Solises as after five years of being blind, Carlos amazingly got his sight. That should also mean that within the next couple of episodes he should get rid of that hideous beard and perhaps Gabby could glam herself a bit more but more for herself than Carlos.
Being able to see is a joy for Carlos but while some of the moments do evoke genuine emotion, there's an element of cheesiness too, particularly the way in which Carlos expresses his joy in being able to see Juanita and Celia. Still it does serve for a good moment between him, Gabby and their kids.
However both Carlos and Gabby do manage to argue over a freaking baseball that Carlos got signed by Lou Gehring that Gabby also sold to a businessman. Still she loves him enough to make a prat of herself to get it back and he returns the favour by buying her a glam dress that technically they can't really afford. And they say romance is dead?
Also in "A Vision's Just A Vision"
Opening sequence of the episode included Lynette trying to get everyone around for a decent breakfast. At least it meant we got to see Parker and Penny again.
Lynette (to everyone): "The first person who steps a foot outside that door will lose a leg".
It's nice to know that no-one in the Scavo family actually thinks that Tom is able to tell Lynette what to do. Let's maintain that thought.
Andrew: "Mom, uh, come on. I mean, since I came out, you haven't shown the slightest interest in my love life".
Bree: "Of course I have".
Andrew: "Handing me a pamphlet on the resurgence of gonorrhoea? That's not what I'm talking about".
Bree (to Andrew): "You can't criticise my parenting and then deny me the chance to make up for it".
Is it me or did Andrew really seem to be dressing rather Orson like during that dinner meal? I know he gets on with the bloke but he doesn't have to dress like him.
Katherine (re MJ): "I'll find someway to get him to like me".
Susan: "I'm sure you will".
Porter: "I was at Edie Britt's".
Tom: "For God sakes. Don't tell me you're having sex with her too".
Isn't Edie's disdaining for Porter a little full on and how come Susan, Bree, Katherine or Gabby haven't voiced an opinion on the lad's guilt?
Bob (re Anne): "You paid off a potential witness".
Lynette: "Hey, who's lawyer are you?"
Bree: "Are you two?"
Andrew (to Alex): "Yes we're getting married and I hate you".
Although Susan did behave childishly in this episode, her comment about Mike being lame with the 'Sports Illustrated' compliment to Katherine was bang on.
Bree (re Alex's adult movie past): "By 'Adult' you mean 'complex' and 'sophisticated'?"
Lee: "No, gay porn".
Edie (to Susan): "I didn't say anything about fixing it. Two of my friends involved in a nasty catfight, I live for this sort of thing".
For a brief moment I thought Carlos would say something about Gabby's looks but it seems he wasn't bluffing when he told her last week that he loved her unconditionally.
Bree (re Alex): "So he's the one?"
Andrew: "Yes, Mom, even with his sordid past, he's the one".
Mike: "What are you doing?"
Susan (re getting back together): "I don't know. You don't ever think about it?"
Chronology: Only a few days since the events of "Me And My Town".
"A Vision's Just A Vision" is certainly a good title for this episode what with Carlos regaining his sight and viewers getting to see more into Dave's psyche but we've certainly had better episodes in the season and I can't help but think that the writers should've had have Dave target someone other than Mike.
