"Great"
Dave (re being a hero): "People keep saying that but I don't feel like one".
Mike: "Well I would've been dead without you, so how about free plumbing for the rest of your life?"
On the plus side if this had been Heroes, Dave probably would've ripped off your scalp and made off with your superpower because Dave is like so obviously evil and all, what with his recent antics. That also raises a slightly interesting conundrum of what kind of superpower that someone like Mike would have. I'm guessing the answer wouldn't be the ability to attract a fair amount of enemies. Then again he has survived being shot, ran over and a fire, so perhaps he'd snag Claire's powers.
Aftermath episodes can be sort of varied on this show. For every "Welcome To Kanagawa", you've got a "Coming Home" to contend with. This episode obviously doesn't live up to the brilliance of last week but at least we can see that the effects of the fire are affecting all of the main characters.
First off all there's Dave, who actually exhibits some guilt towards the fact that he's caused the deaths of seven people due to his arson attack but evidently not enough to admit to the police that he was responsible for it. When they quiz him, he plays dumb but acts visibly uncomfortable when they bring up the fact he saved Mike.
Even a later scene with Edie seems Dave a little conflicted. She's concerned for him, which is nice but when she mentions that people believe that Porter is to blame for the arson, it gives Dave a handy get out of jail free card when he later tells the cops that he saw Porter coming out from the back before the fire broke out.
For someone clever enough this is a dumb move on his part. Not just because it draws unwarranted attention on him but also due to the fact that it never pays to make an enemy out of Lynette.
Then there are his scenes with Mike. When Dave starts talking about his brother, it becomes more obvious that Dave really does believe that Mike was the guy who murdered his brother in jail. Without defending Mike too much, if it's true, it was likely to be self-defence. There's also the possibility however that Dave could have the wrong guy as well.
Dave of course isn't the only concern that Mike has in this episode. He's eager to make his relationship with Katherine public knowledge and the latter is eager to keep it quiet. This all harkens back to Bree's forewarning that once Susan finds out, their friendship will change. Sadly, Bree was actually right.
I said in a previous review that Mike and Katherine are both adults who shouldn't have to seek Susan's permission to date each other and I stick by it. Amazingly, her finding out wasn't as badly handled as I thought it was going to be, despite at least one little wobbly on Susan's part.
Macedonian cookies have a lot to answer for. There are something Susan doesn't like and hated them when eating from Mike's gift basket at the hospital. Also in a moment that will surprise no-one, there were the very same cookies that Katherine baked in a later scene which Susan had the misfortune to eat for a second time.
Needless to say it was enough for her to realise that Mike and Katherine were dating. More importantly, Susan was pretty annoyed to find out that Bree had been privy to their relationship and made the grave error to reprimand Bree on not telling her. Although Bree is a major hypocrite nine times out of ten, I have to love her for not taking Susan's crap.
First off, Mike and Katherine dating is none of her business and secondly, it was Susan's fault (to a degree) for the way her and Mike ended. Eventually Susan does accept them as a couple but decides to distance herself from Katherine. This would be a lot more poignant if Susan and Katherine had actually spent more time in each other's company this season.
Speaking of company, there are plenty of things I can't bear but snoring is something I can live with to a degree, mainly because I snore myself (something in which one of my friends has pointed out in great detail). As childish as Bree and Orson's snoring plot was, I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Everyone has had some injury or something from the fire and Orson's broken nose has made snore like a terrified elephant summoning a herd. As descriptions go, that's got to be one of the best I've come across in a while. It's also pretty damn accurate as Bree is determined to get a good night's sleep.
When her method of persuading Orson to have a simple correction surgery doesn't take, she puts him out of the bedroom. Orson tries to pull a fast one with a sleeping pill/camomile tea cocktail but it works a little too well.
Marcia Cross can definitely pull off drunk/high/disoriented pretty damn well and showing up for a pancake show looking totally out of it is priceless. However for Orson, it also means that he has no choice but to take the surgery or further risk the wrath of his beloved wife.
The best part about this whole plot is the doctor – Alex. Like many sane individuals, he immediately finds Bree and Orson too scary for words and begs his partner never to become that neurotic. The only problem is that his partner is Andrew and something tells me that Alex is going to regret those words by the next episode.
For viewers who have absolutely loathed Andrew not getting any action in the last three seasons, this is something of a godsend but I can't help but feel a little shafted as well. It's nice that Andrew has a serious boyfriend that he's evidently living with but we've missed all the blossoming parts as viewers. That being said, Alex is kind of cute and hopefully him and Andrew will now get more to do than Bob and Lee.
Elsewhere Gabrielle and Carlos have their own surgery plot to – Carlos is days away from getting his eye sight back. Five years has been a long time for the poor man and if the procedure finally works, he can finally shave off that hideous beard that seems destined to become a bird's nest if it grows any bigger.
Of course it's because of this possibility that the episode really goes into overdrive about Gabby's lack of beauty. While Susan's advice was cheesy, there was a degree of truth to, mainly because the producers can't make Eva Longoria Parker look dog rough if they tried.
Still she wants to be her beautiful self again and tries to do some exercise and diets because Edie of all people told her to. The flipside is trying to get Juanita and Celia to join in and clearly these stubborn kids won't help her. Then again, Gabby could've tried to make a better sales pitch with the vegetables.
However there's actually a really nice moment in this episode where Carlos tells Gabby when exactly he fell for her and it's enough to boost her self-esteem but if this surgery does work and Carlos gets his sight back, then him and Gabby should perhaps glam themselves up a bit.
Moving away from the glam side of things, the darker plot in this episode is centred on the Scavos. Lynette makes the idiotic decision to lie to the police about the extent of Porter's fight with Warren and even Tom is smart enough to realise she's telling porkies to them.
Of course like everyone else, they're worried that Porter actually did burn the club down and vow that even if he did, he won't be facing jail time any soon. I can understand Lynette's need to protect her son but you can't just go around lying to the cops either.
It's nice that she actually gets the truth out of Porter and believes him when he tells her that he didn't set the place on fire. However while I don't agree with Lynette lying to her son about Anne's whereabouts, I can't really blame her either. After all, Anne's a freaking succubus.
I know some sympathy was generated on her last week because Warren beat her up but Lynette's right to point out repeatedly that her and Porter's relationship is/was child abuse no matter how she keeps dithering on about being in love with Porter. The fact that it's also revealed that Anne was lying about being pregnant also portrays her in a bad light. Honestly, I'm glad to see the back of the character but I have a feeling this plot still isn't over just yet but on the positive side, it will/should bring Lynette into the Dave plot and I'm all for that kind of development.
Also in "Me And My Town"
The opening scene went on about Gabby's former looks and judging by the overall play on that, I can see why some people might have been offended with this episode.
Detective: "You're an honest to God hero. You should be really proud of yourself".
Dave: "If you say so".
This episode had Gale Harold written out due to his own real life injuries. Hope he gets better soon.
Susan: "So what's her name and who am I happy for?"
Mike: "I'm not telling you".
Gabrielle: "Do you want Mommy to be beautiful?"
Juanita: "No".
Gabby's fashion model past was mentioned in this episode again. Why did the writers scrap the pageant plot from Season Three?
Anne: "What if I'm not ready to leave?"
Lynette: "Then you can face statutory rape charges without the money. Your call".
Susan: "So Bree knew?"
Katherine: "Yes".
Susan: "Okay, have a nice day".
Susan threatening to hurt someone with a pool cue is silly given that she's more likely to impale herself with one.
Bree (to Susan): "Face it, you're not mad at me or Katherine or Mike. You're mad at yourself for letting your marriage fall apart".
Gabrielle: "We don't accept charity".
Carlos: "We always accept charity".
Gabrielle: "Well I've turned over a new leaf".
Virginia has been forgotten but given that France Conroy was essentially wasted in the role, perhaps that's not a bad thing.
Katherine: "I didn't know what I'd do if I lost you as a friend".
Susan (re Mike): "Just take care of him. He's a good guy".
Porter: "Mom, I don't know who set the fire but it wasn't me".
Lynette: "Of course it wasn't".
Keeping with the good sort of continuity we got a mention of Rick here. Now maybe in a few episodes time someone will mention Kayla or Preston, Penny and Parker will have something to do.
Carlos: "Did I ever tell you the first time I knew I was gonna marry you?"
Gabrielle: "First time you saw me on the runway?"
Carlos: "No that was when I knew I was gonna sleep with you".
No Karen/Roberta, Jackson, Bob/Lee or Julie in this episode or MJ for that matter. Where has that kid gone to?
As aftermath episodes go, "Me And My Town" was a fine episode with some nice character moments for everyone. I liked that the fire storyline has in some ways affected every main character and at least one couple in a positive way. Still not entirely if I like that Mike's the one Dave is after but I'm not devastated by it either.
