"Perfect"
Betty (to Matthew): “Now I’m worried”
Yeah and so you should be love, because thanks to your latest cover up gone awry and Edie, the other ladies are beginning to find you a tad suspicious and you know what, it’s about time. When our ladies aren’t snooping around, there are times when they can be rather slow on the uptake of things.
Although Betty isn’t an evil woman, Alfre Woodard consistently amps up the creepy factor whereas Mehcad Brooks’ Matthew is still the moralistic son. Matthew sympathised with Caleb this week, I must admit I’m finding myself increasingly sympathising with the guy too. He misses being with his mother and brother and although he really hates being locked in that basement, he hasn’t made any further attempts of getting out.
When the malevolent Monroe (the guy from the hospital last week) tried to kidnap Caleb, he wouldn’t leave the basement. Unfortunately for Monroe, neither does he when he falls through the Applewhites’ stairs and dies. Caleb’s little “I didn’t do it” stance while chomping on ice cream to both Betty and Matthew as they came home was nothing short of amusing.
Betty certainly has a wonderfully warped way of dealing with situations as she laughs when Matthew locks his keys in the trunk with a dead Monroe. Yeah, Betty, hilarious! She won’t be laughing soon in the next few weeks when one of the ladies is set to discover more about Caleb but which one?
Well, Susan did hear clanging noises from the Applewhites when they first moved into Wisteria Lane and Edie has had her suspicious of them since they bought their house sight unseen, moved in during the middle of the night and of course her earlier confrontation with Monroe also aroused suspicion. There’s also a shot of Bree becoming privy due to Matthew dating Danielle but as far as Lynette and Gabrielle go, I highly doubt it.
Besides Lynette and Gabrielle are far too focused on their marriages seeing as they are the only two who have them right now to even care about the Applewhites. In what seemed a rare moment in which plots intertwine, our opening sequence had the popular apologising to the geek when Gabrielle jokingly kissed Tom on the lips, the first of a good few shocks in this episode. Everyone could see the innocence in it, including Lynette but you know with Lynette that she has trouble letting go, forcing her and Gabrielle to clash the next day at the Scavo residence.
Although Tom is probably the sexiest husband on the street, Gabrielle isn’t attracted to him and I would like to think that she has enough decency and common sense to not sleep with one of her friend’s husbands. Watching Tom cite the ways certain women in the neighbourhood find him attractive was a hoot and a clever ploy to ease Lynette a bit but at the same it definitely triggered some Lynette’s insecurities with Tom. After all, their relationship was started on an affair and it’s easy to see why she would think adultery would be a threat to their marriage and although she behaved more grown up about things later, throwing in Gabrielle’s affair with John into her mate’s face was a little harsh too.
Of course the women made did make up and Lynette also evened the score by making out with Carlos in front of Gabrielle. Gabrielle must have a lot of patience when it comes to her mates because she only gave Tom a peck on the lips whereas Lynette was practically playing tonsil hockey with Carlos. Just before this priceless moment, Gabrielle had thought that the best way of repairing her marriage to Carlos was for him to go and have an affair. For a woman who openly expresses her selfishness on a near enough regular basis, I find this a hard pill to swallow.
Then Gabrielle makes it less unbelievable by then revealing that if Carlos does have an affair, he’ll then have to drop his sanctimonious attitude now that that Gabrielle/John affair is public knowledge. Carlos wasn’t sure at first and Lynette must be an excellent kisser as Carlos primes her up as a possible fling candidate. Watching him chat up Lynette was a little weird but this light hearted plot is such a joy to watch, who really cares?
Also quite riveting is the continued war between Bree and Andrew, which hits round 900 when she freaks out about catching him in bed with Justin. I know walking in on your son in a compromising position might be slightly embarrassing but for crying out woman, ditch the homophobia already. Probably the most steamiest in terms of guy on guy action seen on network TV (and compared to the public outrages of Brokeback Mountain and short lived NBC series The Book Of Daniel, even conservative US viewers didn’t complain), I know Bree is old fashioned and based loosely on Marc Cherry’s mother but this is the one trait I truly deplore with this character. Justin was rather apologetic and she wanted to call the police on him.
Not that I side with Andrew either as the little asshole attempts to blackmail her with the fact she allowed George to die. Although downright evil, Andrew was rather funny during the scene where he described how he would call the police on his own mother. I hate the guy but Shawn Pyfrom is a rather good young actor and his scenes with Marcia Cross are as always, a complicated delight to watch.
Of course Bree doesn’t respond to blackmail very well so she enlists lawyer Karl who puts Andrew in his place both legally and physically when he rough houses the little runt. Another new interaction, I have to admit there were some nice scenes with Bree and Karl, even some chemistry there too. Richard Burgi can play the tough guy well which makes sense as he has the likes of The Sentinel and 24 in his credentials and even Andrew looked scared of him too.
Elsewhere the seemingly good characterisation we’ve been getting with Susan continues as after a rather heartfelt and sincere apology from Zach, her and Julie devise an opportunity for Mike to spend time with his “could be” son through bowling. One of my favourite pastimes although it’s been a while since I last played it. I liked watching Mike and Zach bond, even if the former was struggling with not telling Zach about him. Also could a romantic reunion between Zach and Julie be back on? How would a recently level headed Susan react to that?
Sadly though Paul is back to his usual ways of being skeevy with home schooling Zach, lying to him and upon discovering the bowling incident scrapping with Mike in the street, forcing Susan and Julie to crash into Betty’s car and reveal Monroe’s body. Paul’s “I didn’t do it” reaction was just as effective as Caleb’s. On the serious note, I do have to ask if the writers want us to hate Paul because they’re not exactly endearing him like they could be. For everyone’s sake wouldn’t it be better if Mike and Paul put their differences aside and told Zach the truth about his lineage before things escalate into further violence?
Also in “One More Kiss”
Housewives of the week: Bree, Susan, Lynette, Gabrielle, Edie, Karl and Tom were at Bree’s house party with guests they were glad to see, didn’t want to see and who were too drunk, according to Mary Alice of course.
Gabrielle (to Tom): “On behalf of all the cheerleaders in the world, forgive us”.
Is it really surprising that Gaby was a cheerleader in high school? Not really but I was surprised by Tom’s marching band past.
Bree (re Justin): “What if the neighbours saw you?”
Andrew: “Well I hoped they would think that I landed a hottie”.
Andrew made a comment about Bree’s drinking and him not judging her. If you re-watch certain episodes from Season One and recent episodes, then you’ll realise that the little weasel is onto something.
Edie (to Monroe): “You cross me and I’ll be your worst nightmare. I’m a dangerous woman and you don’t want to mess with me”.
How could Edie have found out that Monroe wasn’t a realtor if he didn’t even give her a name to go on in the first place? Also I didn’t catch the name that appeared on his mobile phone, did anybody?
Bree: “You wouldn’t let the police arrest your own mother?”
Andrew: “Hey we all gotta cut the apron strings at some point”.
Tom (re Penny): “Usually she throws up on immediate family”
Gabrielle: “I’m honoured”.
Who exactly told Bree about Gabrielle and John? I doubt Susan would do it and I doubt Helen Rowland would to, so who else could’ve blabbed?
Carlos (to Gabrielle): “People don’t think you’re harmless. They think you’re a predator”.
Caleb: “Momma’s gonna be mad”
Monroe: “Momma’s love me”.
Gabrielle suggested Carlos having an affair with an old college girlfriend, a call girl and Sister Mary Bernard. She would kill if he did it with the latter.
Karl: “Do you understand what I’m saying?”
Andrew: “Yeah”.
Karl thinks that Bree is a “peach” and Andrew a “turd”. Safe to say he has sense.
Carlos (to Lynette): “That was one hell of a kiss you gave me. You can’t fake chemistry like that”.
No Danielle, Porter, Preston or Parker in this episode. No chronological reference either too.
Matthew: “Are you worried yet? Because I am”
Betty: “Not yet, just be patient, see what happens”.
Standout music: “Rhinestone Cowboy”
What a superb episode! A little outside the usual format but how cool was it for most characters who haven’t spend time with each other Lynette/Carlos, Gabrielle/Tom and Bree/Karl to interact? This needs to be done a little more frequently in my opinion. “One More Kiss” might just be the best episode of the season, even beating previous favourite “Colour And Light”. This is a bonafide classic episode.
