Pie Matters

"Superb"
Bree (to Katherine): "Certainly no tips are needed. Like my friends say, best pie ever made".
You do know this means war. It's only episode two and already the gloves are being taken off between Bree and Katherine. For two women so annoyingly alike, it's perhaps not that shocking that instead of bonding, there's an instant clash between them.
Both Bree and Katherine could be described as being mother hens and if there's one thing a mother hen won't do is allow someone else to swoop and try to run the show. The behaviour between these two is certainly evident of that.
With typically childish playground dynamics, Bree is determined to put Katherine in her place and when the new red head in town brings a lemon meringue after Bree specifically told her to stick to salad, it's almost surprising that Bree didn't react to Susan, Lynette and Gabrielle preferring Katherine's pie by breaking her rival's arm.
Katherine definitely knew what she was doing in that scene. She hid Bree's pie and watched everyone's delight when eating it. To someone like Katherine, that's one way to get a victory. Bree's fury could be felt off the screen but much as I felt for her, I still thought it was hilarious.
That's the funny thing about this story. With a plot as trivial as a lemon meringue, it's amazing how fantastic it's played out. This should be a pain in the arse to watch not interesting. It's even relieving to see Bree get so worked up about Katherine upstaging but at the same, this is the only kind of plot that would work with Bree's characters. It's not like Susan, Lynette or Gabrielle really give a damn about food.
Not only does this plot also remind us of Marcia Cross' flair for comedy but it's nice to see a mundane scene of sorts with Bree and Orson instead of them plotting or nearly getting killed for their troubles. However Orson does make the mistake of accidentally complimenting Katherine's pie. No wonder Bree gets so pissed.
Because of this whole scenario, the rivalry between Bree and Katherine is immediately vocalised. Neither woman took to each other in "Now You Know" and both of them do go out of their way to smite the other. Bree does this by accusing Katherine of being deliberately manipulative but Katherine's able to dismiss Bree's mincemeat pie recipe and even pulls off a label off her skirt. I wouldn't be surprised if these two didn't engage in a cake fight like Nora and Holly in Brothers And Sisters.
However as smart as Katherine would like to think she is (and she does seem pretty clued up), making an enemy of Bree wasn't her best move. Like Gabrielle, Bree is vindictive to get back someone in an excruciating manner and when Katherine refuses to give Bree the secret ingredient for her lemon meringue, Bree just decides to take it. Yeah, like breaking and entering isn't a common occurrence in this show.
Of course all this fuss over a recipe, you were kind of hoping it would lead to something a bit more juicy and fortunately it did. Before Bree is able to leg it out of the Mayfairs, she overhears Dylan and Katherine arguing about the former's father. Katherine was pretty ominous when she came back to Wisteria Lane and now Bree will be determined to get to the bottom of it.
So what the heck is Katherine's big secret? One guess that I have is her killing Dylan's father in self-defence, hence the rush to move to Chicago back in 1995. Perhaps Dylan's father was an abuser but Dylan not remembering is the other thing. Is the girl called Dylan biologically Katherine or did Katherine go to extremes to make Dylan forget the big secret.
Connecting Katherine to the wives was a good touch. This how the Seasons One and Three mysteries worked so well and how the Season Two one with the Applewhites failed miserably. It was nice to see Mary Alice and Susan in flashbacks as both women questioned Katherine's urgent need to leave town. I'm hoping Susan also plays a role in the mystery than just purely Bree.
With Julie being Uber suspicious of Dylan, it's a good possibility. As for Julie, four years down the line and she still hasn't turned into the child from hell. Heck even when her and Mike have opposing views on a neighbourhood party and Susan ends up taking Mike's side, I still can't Julie annoying. I have to admit I sort of like the friction between Julie and Mike in this episode. Not that I want Julie to start disliking Mike but I admire the show for showing the difficulties of Mike's transition in Julie's life. He's got from the on-off boyfriend to her mother to now being her stepfather. That change was never going to be easy and I applaud the show for addressing.
However Susan does make a bad error in judgement. Telling Julie she can't go to a party in front of Mike, only to let her go behind Mike's back isn't fair. While Mike has to earn the right to be an authority figure in Julie's life, Susan's attempts of appeasing both parties is more likely to create more tension between Mike and Julie than stop it. Susan's heart is in the right place but as per usual her actions are a bit backwards.
It's hilarious then when Susan has to bust Julie out of the party. Given Susan's penchant for weirdness, it's fun to see a bunch of randy teenagers confuse her for a stripper and for Julie to find her embarrassing. As for the party, jeez Mike if you ever saw Skins, then you'd have reason to worry. The party in question was embarrassingly tame and Julie was probably the only one not drinking alcohol. I don't know why but that slightly disappointed me.
The resolution to that plot was a little too easy. Mike forgave Susan for lying to him and Julie made a few cheeky comments. All in all, this was the light hearted plot of the week.
So with the light hearted, there was more heavy things to balance it out. Lynette continues to deal with chemo and Tom gets booted out for being too sappy. Aw, even when Tom is being sweet, he loses points. Then again Lynette did make it clear from the last time that she wanted no pity, tears, etc. I get where Tom was coming from but if I were Lynette, I'd probably feel the same way.
With Tom no longer invited to chemo, it's the girls who take turns to visit Lynette in hospital. Heck, even Katherine is busting her backside to be by Lynette's side and she hardly knows. I kinda hope that Katherine is being genuine with Lynette and not just doing it to piss Bree off even more. However not every housewife is willing to give Lynette their time. Of course it would have to be Gabrielle who would try to come up every lame excuse under the sun not to see Lynette in the hospital. For once, it's not Gabrielle's total lack of concern for other people that's stopping but clearly it gets to Lynette.
So what's Gabby's beef? Aside from the universal loathing of hospitals that nearly everyone has, there's a surprising backstory – Gabby had a father who died of cancer when she was little, hence her hatred of hospital. Her fidgeting attitude should've been a giveaway. Even Gabby cares about her friends.
Given how much Gabby gets on my nerves, it's great that the writers do give her a little depth every now and then. Her constant fidgeting at the hospital felt realistic and seeing as her father died when she was so young, I can see why it still affects her. It's also great to see Eva Longoria-Parker do something emotive and she plays off brilliantly with Felicity Huffman in that scene alone.
As if that wasn't awesome enough, Lynette's determination to live had Gabby throwing a party for her at the hospital with the rest of the girls. Why can't we see this side to her more often? You have to admit it's a heck of a lot more interesting than her affair with Carlos.
Personally I just wish Edie and Victor would catch the two of them so Edie can move on and stop acting like a bunny boiler and Victor can just leave. Gabby can still leave Victor but Edie literally has Carlos by the balls thanks that offshore account. Damn, Carlos you may be cute but you are amazingly stupid as well.
Edie gets her own birthday wish by twisting Carlos' arm in accepting her proposal and Carlos finally decides that enough is enough when he's talking to a shady guy at the end. Granted Edie has become a pain but I still don't want her killed. Just break her and Carlos up already, that's all.
Also in "Smiles Of A Summer Night"
For the second episode in a row, there's those annoying short credits. Please don't tell me that we're the same Season Two scenario again.
Katherine (to Susan/Bree/Gabrielle): "So if it isn't the gossip brigade. Who have we been dishing on today?"
Gabrielle: "Susan"
Katherine: "But she's standing right behind you".
If Katherine left Wisteria Lane in 1995, then how come herself and Bree never met? Bree moved to Fairview before then.
Susan: "You really don't want to miss out on Bree's pie. It's brilliant"
Katherine: "Well, then who am I to argue with perfection?"
Tom: "Honey, I'm your ride"
Lynette: "I'll cab it".
Katherine pulling off the label off Bree reminded me of Nina doing that to Lynette in "I Wish I Could Forget You".
Carlos: "Do you want me to go to jail?"
Edie: "Goodness, Carlos. I had no idea your situation was so precarious".
Susan: "And you know I love you both"
Julie: "Decide"
Susan: "Mike".
Why didn't Edie go to see Lynette at the hospital or visit her during lunch? Lynette visited her during the fake suicide and I thought that Edie actually liked (or at least respected) Lynette.
Orson: "Don't be so hard on yourself. This one's fantastic"
Bree (re Katherine): "That's hers".
Gabrielle (re hospital visit): "Is this a test of our friendship?"
Lynette: "Yeah, kinda. Can you pencil me in?"
Gabrielle: "Can't wait".
Lynette's stopped wearing the wig in this episode. Maybe it's part of her acceptance that she has cancer while being determined to beat it.
Carlos: "So I'm dying to see what I got you. How thoughtful was I?"
Edie: "Very".
Edie: "Carlos, I think I'm gonna cry"
Carlos: "Yeah me too".
There was no Andrew, Danielle, any Scavo children or Stella in this episode.
Mike: "She was worried when she left with a stripper"
Julie (to Susan): "The jig is up, Mom".
Lynette: "Don't you care enough to make the effort?"
Gabrielle: "You don't think I care?"
Susan, Mary Alice and Katherine had dodgy wigs. Has anyone filled Katherine in on Mary Alice's mystery?
Gabrielle: "I was scared I was gonna lose you"
Lynette: "You're not gonna lose me".
Adam (re Dylan): "She's only gonna ask more questions"
Katherine: "And we're gonna have to come up with better lies".
Chronology: None is specified since "Now You Know".
Okay two episodes in and I'm liking the results. "Smiles Of A Summer Night" keeps up the mystery angle, sets up a shift in dynamics and delivers with the moving stuff (Lynette/Gabby) as well as some of the best one-liners of the season.
