"Great"
If life is a really game of charades, then perhaps the ladies on Wisteria Lane should quit while they're ahead. Each of the women (okay maybe not Susan or Lynette) has something to hide and the risk of their lies being exposed is on the increase.
With Bree you've got a woman who actually thinks that faking a pregnancy is better than admitting to the world you're going to be a grandmother in your forties. Because Bree prefers the former option she also has to keep coming up with convoluted ways in order to ensure that people don't touch her stomach.
Of course Bree has dealt with that problem so far by threatening to break the hand of a neighbour and when Susan asks her for an obstetrician, Bree gives her the number of the dodgiest place she happens to find. Given this show's ability to over exaggerate, Susan gets sent to the biggest dump in Wisteria Lane for expectant mothers. Next time Bree, don't bother to help.
Naturally Susan is pretty pissed off that her friend would send her to such a place and tries to use the charades party she's organised to have it out with Bree. Bree isn't exactly prepared to give Susan a good reason for her strange behaviour which would make anyone even more suspicious. You know for someone so repressed, Bree really isn't the world's greatest liar, now is she?
Also Susan has every right in the world to be mad at Bree. It's not like Susan is being overtly nosy and nor was she aware of Bree's personal problems. You keep hoping that Bree will either get caught out or that Danielle will pop the kid because three episodes in, Bree is doing a lousy job at faking a pregnancy.
However there is a slight just reason for Bree being extra strange. It seems that being denied a DVD player and stuck in a convent brings out a more adventurous side to Danielle. By that, the silly girl goes roller skating and puts the baby's health at risk. You'd think that Danielle would should any kind of concern but the selfish couldn't care less.
I don't want to support Bree's ludicrous plan but given how unbelievably irresponsible Danielle is behaving, I can see why Bree thinks it's a good idea to raise the kid as her and Orson's. In four seasons Danielle has still yet to actually mature and it seems that carrying a kid isn't doing much to speed up the process.
With complications risking the baby's health, there's a wonderful between Marcia Cross and Kyle McLachlan as Bree and Orson fret over the baby's safety and then are relieved when everything turns out fine. Bree's concerns for the child is touching but a part of me would've rather seen Danielle's reaction instead.
Still it does lead to a great scene between Bree and Susan as both women discuss impending motherhood. If last week's scene between Lynette and Gabrielle was touching, then so is this. Bree almost comes pretty close to telling Susan that the pregnancy was a fake but I knew she'd chicken out of confessing. If she continues to act suspiciously, then she'll expose herself anyway.
As for Susan's impending motherhood, there could be some slight tension between her and Mike. Mike gets ahead of himself with the cot and the paint, which while it might be sweet, I get why Susan is on red alert. Still her and Mike are pretty solid and if the kid manages to bypass Mike's penchant for drugs and Susan's bumbling manner, it should be pretty okay.
However in the lying stakes, you have to give it to Katherine. The woman continues to attract suspicion on a regular basis but at least she makes a more conscious effort to diffuse it as best she can. When the girls are a little too eager for Katherine to come to Susan's charades party, the woman takes the bait.
Of course when she's at the party though, the first thing that gets on her wick is Adam and Gabrielle. Edie being the good Samaritan that she is tells Katherine about Gabby's sordid past with other men and Katherine uses this to lay into Gabby after she spilt a drink on Adam.
Now I'm all for picking on Gabrielle but even I was thinking that Katherine should've backed the hell off here. Okay so Gabby was using Adam to make both Carlos and Victor jealous but it's not like she started ripping Adam's clothes off either. Heck, I even sided with Gabby for once and I more than cheered her on when she laid into Katherine for hitting Dylan and lying about the girl's father.
Now this is where Katherine is actually good. Last week she promised to come up with better lies and making strong allusions to Dylan's father being an abuser is convincing enough to keep people off the scent. Of course Katherine shouldn't relax for too long. People do tend to get more suspicious as time goes on.
If the housewives weren't a threat to Katherine, then it seems that Julie is a good adversary too. Julie is not only persuading Dylan to act questions but she's also getting her to break into a locked room and look through some items Katherine kept hidden. I like that Julie is involved in this mystery and her friendship with Dylan is also pleasant. Julie doesn't have many regular friends.
Katherine did deal with the Julie situation by telling Dylan not to hang out with her but is Katherine stupid enough to get on Susan's wrong side? She's already got Bree and Gabrielle hating her guts so it might not be in Katherine's best interests to piss Susan off as well.
As for the mystery, does it involve Dylan's father? We know something bad happened in that room with the way Katherine was tearing up the carpet. Then there's Adam as well. I got a bad vibe from him in the first episode and the way Katherine is when Adam talks to other women is suspect. Was Adam caught in some form of a sex scandal back in Chicago? Is that another reason why they are back in Wisteria Lane?
Speaking of sex, anyone else less than riveted with this whole Victor/Gabrielle/Carlos/Edie quadrangle? After watching last week's episode, I've just realised that I only care about Gabrielle when she does something awesome for someone she doesn't happen to be shagging. When she is screwing around, my interest level seems to dwindle.
In other words, this is story that's too simple but is made complicated so the writers can stretch it for a bit. Gabrielle doesn't want to be with Victor and Carlos definitely wants to see the back of Edie but neither of them will dump their unwanted lover. Carlos' hands might be tied with Edie knowing about his secret bank account but Gabby doesn't have the same problem.
She's under the impression that Victor doesn't love her and she seethes when he learns about John and looks at the affair as something to spin rather than something to deal with. What makes me laugh is then she tells Carlos how much she loves the way he loves her. It's hilarious because in Season One Carlos was seriously possessive and now in Season Four, Victor also shows his possessive streak.
It's during an illuminating conversation between himself and Carlos that Victor reveals what he would do if caught Gabby with another man. Basically it would mean Carlos wearing cement boots and taking a swim. Carlos actually looked scared during that scene. It's enough to give this quadrangle an element of momentum.
Of course Victor isn't only Carlos' main problem. It seems with every passing episode Edie becomes more and more possessive and even announces an engagement during the party. Whatever Carlos is planning to do with that accountant to get Edie out of his life, he might wanna forward things along. I hate the way Edie is being written this season. She's almost making me feel sympathetic towards Gabby.
Thankfully there's one person I can sympathise with wholeheartedly and that is always Lynette. This cancer plot is still one of the best elements of Season Four and adding Stella to the mix has been a reason why. She gives Lynette the kind of boost that neither Tom or the gaggle of kids they have can do.
When Lynette is unable to eat this week, Stella suggest some drugs to increase her appetite. Lynette refuses so Stella does what every mother does and er, gets some weed off Andrew. Clearly Stella has been TiVo-ing Weeds because her next course of action to make pot brownies and have Parker feed them to Lynette.
Having Lynette high on drugs reminds me of the Fishers getting off their faces with the stuff and it makes the charades party a hell of a lot more interest. Lynette's in high spirits to kick lamps and talking during charades. You mightn't want her on your team in this state but you'd certainly find her a tonic to watch too.
When Stella is forced into confessing, Tom has to do a frantic run around and stop everyone else from getting high. I think personally I would've force fed the brownies to Katherine. For the third episode in a row, Tom gets to be a mature adult. It would be nice if the writers could maintain that.
Of course Lynette does have it out with Stella. The thing is while Stella was wrong to drug her daughter, the reasons behind suggest that despite her terrible parenting, Stella does actually care for Lynette. It also helps that both Felicity Huffman and Polly Bergin work so well off each other too. How come Stella is the only mother of a housewife that actually works on this show?
Also in "The Game"
Three episodes in and we're still getting the short credits. I guess we're stuck with them for the season, then?
Gabrielle (re phone call): "Don't answer it. Susan's having another game night"
Bree: "Another one? Someone should send her an anominous letter".
There was an episode in Brothers And Sisters' first season called "Game Night". This episode reminds me of it a little.
Lynette: "You're suggesting pot?"
Stella: "A lot of patients used it. Hell I did".
Adam: "You really want to stop this"
Katherine: "Given our history, shouldn't I be saying that to you?"
Anyone find anything interesting in the way Andrew reacted to seeing Lynette high at the charades party? I thought there might be something in it.
Tom (to Lynette): "How's the lasagne?"
Stella: "Why don't you ask it yourself?"
Carlos: "It's Susan and Mike's party. I don't want it to be all about us"
Edie: "You're right. I might drop some hints though".
Three episodes in and we've all had parties of sorts, though there was no explanation why we got a party here.
Adam (to Katherine): "You know what? I think I'm behind in the alcohol department. Let me catch up".
Dylan: "Where did you learn to do this?"
Julie: "When you live with a mother who eternally locks herself out, you develop new skills".
Julie and Dylan's snooping felt like a Season One rethread when her and Susan went to get evidence away from Martha Huber.
Gabrielle (re Adam): "I just spilt my drink on him"
Katherine: "And now you're trying to make it up by breastfeeding him?"
Bree: "I said I was sorry. For God's sakes Susan, not everything is about you".
It seems that there's a bit of friendly competition between Orson and Tom during party games. Nice to see the male friendships develop too.
Gabrielle: "I don't just love you. I love the way you love me"
Carlos: "So, are we back on?"
Stella: "So how was the party?"
Lynette: "You drugged me"
Stella: "Just a little".
Lynette played Yentl in Fiddler On The Roof. I played a Russian soldier in that when I was 15.
Lynette: "You remembered?"
Stella: "Yeah. There are some performances so bad even alcohol can't block them out".
Chronology: At least a day passed since "Smiles Of A Summer Night".
Another light and breezy episode, "The Game" really does show how genius the comic timing on this show. I'm loving the tone of this season so far and the little bits to Katherine's mystery are nice.
