One of my personal favorites of DH. This is a unique little episode that shows Susan coping with a sudden loss of her newfound romance with Mike. She mourns him and feels miserable, so Edie offers to take her to a bar, get her drunk and hook her up with a random guy in a dark alley ;) but they decided to snoop around the Young house instead and Paul almost catches them. The scene where Edie pretends she just came by to return the key at midnight (and drunk) was one of her best moments in the show lol. The look on her face was priceless when she realized that even though she helped Susan getting out of there, but she is trapped and making out with Mr. Paul "Weirdo" Young. To this day I think Nicollette Sheridan was robbed of Golden Globe in Jan 2005 and I even dare to say she should have submitted this episode for the Emmys that year, I bet she would have gotten at least a nomination.

Bree is concerned because Maisy Gibbons (Rex was paying her for some sex stuff) is arrested and she wants to help herself so she releases a "Little Black Book" that contains some specific details and most importantly the names of her clients. Bree tries to bribe her with some homemade muffins and then offers her 14,000 dollars, but Maisy refuses. by the end of the episode everyone knows that Rex was one of her clients. So Bree does a great act of kindness when she notices Gaby must be having some kind of money issues and lends the money to her instead. Lynette had this very little, but entertaining storyline with one of the other school moms :)

This was a very interesting episode. I can't remember a lot of season one, and this episode was very good. I liked the storylines. Although, Susan didn't really have a storyline, except for being upset over Mike. I liked that Rex's secret may be exposed. Maisy Gibbons is so cruel. Plus, the lice thing was a good plot. It's similar to the episode of The New Adventures Of Old Chirstine that aired last night (4.19: Hair). I liked Gabby's plot, too. It is interesting to see her not have money. Plus, Edie is amazing. "Your wife's been dead six months, lighten up." LMAO! Good episode.

  • Despite several plot inconsistencies, I decided that this was my favorite episode of Desperate Housewives' freshman season. It was funny, lots of character development, and so many great scenes between Edie and Susan.

I loved almost every episode of Desperate Housewives, but I decided that this one is my favorite so far. I know, it may not be everyone else's, but it had some great moments, and lots of great scenes between Edie and Susan. I think that Nicollette Sheridan and Teri Hatcher have the best on-screen chemistry of any of the actors, and that the show should definitely utilize that as much as possible.

The show began with the exposure of Maisy Gibbon's secret life, which was fun to watch. Sharon Lawrence is a great guest star, and I hope that she comes back next season. There were some great scenes between her and Bree. Also, I loved the scene with Rex and Bree at the country club and everyone looking at them.

One of my favorite scenes in the episode was Edie playing poker with Gabrielle, Lynette and Bree. It was funny how Edie was trying to poke into Susan's business, and how she of all people ends up becoming Susan's ally. Taking her out for drinks, and then they break into Paul's house was the episode's best moments.

Also I loved Felicia's scenes with Paul and Edie as well. Felicia is a great character, and the actress playing her is terrific. The scenes with Gabrielle and Carlos fighting about their plumbing, and her stealing the port-a-potty are also classics.

The episode had some wonderful moments, and was also funny. I really enjoyed it. Plus, we got to see more of Nicollette Sheridan than in any other episode, who in my opinion, is very underutlized. I think that the show will use her more often in season two.

"Guys, we should be ashamed of ourselves for reveling in that woman's misery. That being said, Edie, please continue."--Lynette

When it comes to news about others that is truly shocking, yet amazingly entertaining I think we all come under the guilt when someone is outed whether it being at a loss of money or affairs revealed, marital problems, sexual preferences discussed it is truly embarassing when someone is talking about you.

Maisy Gibbons becomes a victim of the gossip when she is arrested for lewd acts and solicitation as we all know she is guilty of after having an affair with Rex Van De Kamp. You have to feel sorry for Maisy because she was once on top bossing around women like Lynette but then she has to turn to prostitution for money.

The news of Maisy's outing hits home rather deep for Bree since Maisy's little black book will be revealing all of Maisy's previous encounters. Not that the people will get arrested but rather the shame and humiliation the solicitor and his wife will face i.e. Bree & Rex. After being shamed at her country club while dining with Rex, Bree takes this as the final straw and goes to visit Maisy in jail. When Bree offers her a bribe, Maisy questions their friendship when she was not there went her husband lost her job. Maisy refuses to accept Bree's offer which leads Bree to explain to her that if she was a little more nice, she would probably have more friends to count on.

It seems everyone is being outed this week including Lynette Scavo when cases of head lice plague the school Porter and Preston attend. The school has a no-blame policy however the parents believe the Scavo boys to be the boys behind the lice break out. When Porter and Preston are uninvited to a big birthday party, Lynette digs around for the problem which seems to be her sons taking the blame for being the start of the lice. When Lynette pleads her case to the nurse and offers her a bribe, Lynette learns it was the son of the mother who had originally blamed Porter and Preston. The next day, Lynette and the boys crash the party where a confrontation ensues among the boy's mother and Lynette. When Lynette threatens to tell every parent it was her son, the mother agrees to Lynette's stipulations and the boys are allowed to remain at the party.

Susan has been down in the dumps since her break up with Mike Delfino which ended the ongoing mystery from last month's cliffhanger. Edie Britt returning from her 3 episode absence returns as a friend to Susan when they both go to a bar and try to pick up a guy. When this fails and the conversation turns into the mystery that is of Mary Alice Young. Edie tells Susan she still has Paul Young's house key and that they should snoop around. When they arrive on the scene, the duo try to find evidence that looks fishy. They then find a video marked with Angela on the tape, a video from her nursing days in Utah according to Felicia Tillman. Paul soon arrives home where Susan escapes while Edie has Paul in a lip lock. They leave behind one visible item: Angela's tape clearly seen still sitting on Paul's couch.

And finally, we come to Gabby. Gabrielle is ultimately struggling with her accounts freezed and Carlos on house arrest. It's no wonder that they have really hit rock bottom when their sewer system breaks and they have no money to fix it. When Bree hears that Gabby has been using a porto john in her backyard and using her jacuzzi to do the laundry and when Gabby constantly goes to one of the housewives' homes to use their bathroom instead of using the money to renew their country club membership Bree gives Gabby the gift of friendship when she offers to pay their plumbing bills.

Clearly that is an act of kindness and friendship between the two since they are both going through such difficult life changes. Bree: having to witness the humiliation of her husband's affair and Gabby being broke and not even having the liberties of using her own toilet. And yet they both say nothing to embarrass the other person, that is what friendship is built upon.

Other important events in "The Ladies Who Lunch"...

*I really loved Gabby and Bree's conversation about how great friends are always there when you need them and how you are not only just a friend when you help someone you care about.

*Carlos is still home, why hasn't he taken the plea bargain? He could've been out by now!

*I loved the parts when Gabby was using the other ladies' bathrooms and then doing the laundry in her jacuzzi.

*I kind of felt sorry for Maisy Gibbons even though she is probably one of the least of my favorite characters.

*I feel Rex deserved to be outed what he did to Bree was uncalled for. I think the humiliation really didn't hurt Rex that much, it was more for Bree which is actually sad.

*Even though up to this point Edie has been really annoying, I'm actually starting to like her. She seems like such a good person underneath even though she is such an annoying person on top.

"The Ladies Who Lunch" has to be one of my favorite episodes along with "Impossible". It was very entertaining to see an episode that really seems so true to life. Awesome! The next few couldn't come quicker!
  • Talk Of The Town Written by Alexandria Cunningham Directed by Arlene Sanford

    "Great"
As suburbia proves we're something of sadists because when it comes to gossip, we absolutely love to spread the word left, right and centre, especially if it's somebody we don't particularly care for. Hell, every tabloid and the Heat magazines of the world regale in all things scandalous and unsurprisingly enough so do the residents of Wisteria Lane.

With the services she provides for the men folk, Maisy was always going to be caught out at some point and her "entrapment", followed by her arrest was a great way of kicking the episode off to a flying start. Talk about sheer comic timing and ultimate hilarity rolled into one. But as funny as Maisy's comeuppance was, I honestly wasn't surprised that Bree in some way would suffer too.

Yes, the neighbours of Wisteria Lane obviously got wind of Rex being one of Maisy's numerous clients which was another blow for the Van De Kamp's. Bree deserves credits in trying to keep her husband's clandestine activities a secret (seems a basket full of muffins aren't enough to silence the resident tramp) but mostly for how she handled the situation when it was leaked. Compared to Rex who just looked like he wanted the world to swallow him up. Not today pal, but maybe George's poison pills will send him on his way as complaints of pain are still. Rex, you're a doctor, figure it out already – your pills are being rigged and I don't even care about you that much.

Although I'm no fan of Maisy, I found her scenes in prison (Sharon Lawrence on the wrong side of bars after all those years on NYPD Blue) with Bree were extraordinarily complex. The woman's a pain in the rectum, no question there but it has been pointed out that her little prostitution job wasn't a career choice but an ugly necessity when things went bad for her family. The moment where she castigated Bree for openly expressing concern or compassion over her financial woes wasn't entirely out of order. That being said, if the boot had been on the other foot, I seriously doubt that Maisy would lean a helping hand to her former rival, given her former vile attack on Lynette. However to point out, Bree did visit Maisy, the only resident out of the community to do so and while her motives may have been selfishly driven, I think a part of Bree does feel a slight side of pity for her, unlike the other vultures in this town, who were all too happy to see Maisy get her dues. Also, I will point one other thing – how come Rex was the only husband exposed? There was definitely more and it would have been interesting for Bree to call out at least one of her so called neighbours on this.

Keeping with downfalls, Carlos and Gabrielle's streak of bad luck just keeps a coming. Not only does Princess Gabrielle not afford the luxury items she once clamoured for but also now things have gotten so bad that when unable to afford fixing their sewage system, she's resorted to stealing a portable toilet. I think the writers are really beginning to over milk this whole plot when they should be concentrating on more important ones concerning the Solis' but it's still utterly hilarious having Gabby taken a few notches down as well as having her finding inventive ways to do laundry and ultimately survive because housebound Carlos is doing squat to help. There are also some incredible scenes between her and Bree in the final act where the ethics of friendship, personal misfortunate and public humiliation get an interesting discussion with both Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria giving very nuanced performances.

Meanwhile Lynette has to brave a scandal of her own when the twins are accused of spreading head lice in Barcliff (how they haven't got suspended is amazing). For once the damage is not of their doing and there's a funny exchange when Lynette uncovers the real culprit when she gets a more dignified payback than last time (aka no eggs get hurled here). It's an okay plot but I'm really feeling sorry for Felicity Huffman who is getting less interesting stuff to do and the only things that really did stand out with Lynette's story this week was that Tom got involved in cleaning the twins hair out and in a subtler moment the revelation of Lynette's mother being dead, even though that felt too much like an afterthought to really matter.

Fortunately there's some riveting stuff with the ongoing Mary Alice/Angela mystery as creepy Paul finally figures that his dead wife and Felicia really did work together in Utah and it almost looked like Susan and LB Edie were gonna find out too but didn't. Anyway the main gist of this plot is that Paul, realising he's on borrowed time goes overtime in trying to make Mike look guilty for Martha's death. Felicia, obviously brighter than most of the residents of this picturesque town, pretty much just says to him "cut the bullshit, I know Mike's innocent, asshole". I think Felicia actually knows that Paul is responsible for Martha's demise and is biding her precious time before she can screw him over and I really believe her presence in Wisteria Lane revolves more around the Mary Alice/Dana and possibly Deirdre arc the more she appears on screen.

Finally, Susan and Edie – how much did I enjoy these two together in tonight's instalment? A bloody lot. I don't personally care too much about whatever off screen tensions there is with these actresses because on screen they are electric. However it was Edie who proved more entertaining and engaging than usual, which was also helped the increased amount of screen time allocated for Nicollette Sheridan. Edie's caustic comments during the poker game with the other housewives were fun, bringing Susan on the tear was neat and then she went where only few people are brave enough to go by making out with Paul in order for Susan to sneak out of the house. I mentioned an attraction between them in my "Anything You Can Do" review and I was right, although naturally enough it's only on Paul's side. If the scene didn't make laugh so hard, I probably would have rooted for one of them. Everything Edie did in this episode was brilliant in this episode, she was my favourite of the hour and I totally salute her.

Susan on the other hand spent too much moping about Mike for me to be really getting caught up in. In some places I found it a little too overdone I almost dosed off. Another gripe I had with it is that I really wish Susan would actually ask Mike about his past instead of just taking the police's word for granted so in my opinion, she's making it a lot worse for herself than Mike pursuing her is.

Also in "The Ladies Who Lunch"

Lynette: "I don't get it, who would pay Maisy for sex?"

Gabrielle: "Obviously someone who is not getting it at home".

Liked the opening sequences of the episode, although it felt a little too cartoonish. Then again, so did last week's episode.

Gabrielle (to Carlos): "I can't argue right now, I have to do the laundry".

Gabrielle's portable toilet (some poster pointed it out in tvtome) does look very TARDIS like? Almost surprised Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper didn't pop out of it at some point. Then we could've had Desperate Whowives. Hee hee.

Maisy: "I've been abandoned. I guess that's what happens when you become the town whore".

Bree: "Oh Sweetie, they didn't abandon you because you're a whore. They abandoned you because you weren't that nice to begin with".

Loved the way Bree pulled the muffin basket away from Maisy. And Maisy looked very worn out by the end of the episode.

Bree: "Rex if you walk out of this restaurant, I will scream"

    Rex: "Bree …"

Bree: "I will scream about your cruelty. Then I will scream about your infidelity. And just to make sure it really hurts, I will scream about your distasteful sexual habits. You want to know what true humiliation is, you just take one step".

Edie: "What the hell kind of street do we live on?"

    Susan: "I don't know".

There was a lot of Edie stuff in this episode. We learned her first husband taught her poker, Martha swiped her favourite necklace but what really impacted me was Susan recapping her on everything from the previous 15 episodes concerning the Youngs.

Something of a guilty pleasure episode than a real serious number, "The Ladies Who Lunch" continues with the series' witty grasp on all things scandal worthy though on the flip, the lack of plots advanced is a bummer but seeing how much fun this episode was, I don't mind waiting just a little longer for all necessary plot developments.
