The "Maigret" series, which had won the BBC such high praise over its four seasons, ended at Christmas, 1963. The BBC needed to find a new detective series - this show was in the nature of a series of auditions...
Instead of one detective hero having miscellaneous adventures, why not a different detective every week? This show was, in effect, a succession of pilot episodes, as various famous and not-so-famous stories were adapted in the hope that at least one of them would go down well enough with the viewing public to be the inspiration for a new show - revolving around some sleuth who would become as popular as Rupert Davies's Maigret had been. Davies even introduced each episode. Three new shows eventually appeared following their debuts here. The quality of individual episodes was immensely variable. John Addison's theme music was very lively, presaging his later scores for "Sleuth" and "Murder, She Wrote".
