The adventures of Eve Gill, written by Selwyn Jepson, had been quite popular in the 1940s and a couple of them had even been turned into an Alfred Hitchcock film, the 1950 British-made "Stage Fright". Hitchcock was dissatisfied with this film, chiefly because his Hollywood bosses insisted on the American Jane Wyman playing Eve. In this BBC version of a different Jepson yarn, she's played by the sensual and assured Jane Merrow, whilst her rascal father is played by Esmond Knight, an eminent actor who lost his eyesight in World War II, but went right on acting nonetheless - he was a busy actor almost to the last day of his life. The story is only so-so, but the actors are charming.moreless
