The body of a man is found pierced through the heart with an arrow, the door and windows of his study locked from the inside. His prospective son-in-law, locked in the room with him, denies murder. Barrister-detective Sir Henry Merrivale investigates.moreless
  • A classic locked-room mystery featuring the portly, bibulous lawyer-sleuth Sir Henry Merrivale, known as "H.M." to his colleagues.

John Dickson Carr - also known as "Carter Dickson" - was a specialist in the locked-room type of mystery story, of which this is a prime example. If you know what a judas window is, you should be able to figure it all out fairly quickly, which doesn't stop the explanation from being preposterously ingenious. David Horne isn't quite right as the red-cheeked H.M., although his lapses into cockney slang ("Take a dekko at this...") are amusing, given his posh accent.moreless
