  • The famous Sherlock Holmes story about a deadly snake slithering down a bell-pull was done well enough here to lead to a brief Sherlock Holmes series, also starring Wilmer and Stock.moreless

It's perfectly all right by the standards of the TV drama of its day, it's just that it pales in retrospect when one compares it with the later version in the Jeremy Brett series for ITV in the 1980s. Wilmer's long face and piercing eyes make him good casting for Holmes, and he's altogether more likeable (and less a tragic figure) than Brett was, but Nigel Stock is rather too slow-witted and blustering as Watson and Felix Felton, as the dastardly Dr. Roylott, over-acts like a villain in a pantomime. The eventual 1965 series used a repeat of this show as its first episode, removing the Davies introduction, of course.moreless
