In Dexter's flashback of the hospital, the doctors discuss a problem with his blood type. They say that he has a very rare blood type, AB negative, and therefore can't get a blood donor. However, this is incorrect. In reality AB negative can receive from any other negative blood type- A,B,O, or AB.
When Dexter is about to see the body at the morgue, a digital clock over his shoulder reads "4:11." In the very next shot, however, it says "4:17."
When Deb is waking up and starts talking to Rudy, there's an exceedingly quick shot where you can tell Jennifer Carpenter is wearing pasties.
Dexter references his biological father living "five hours up I-95." However, Dade City is located in Pasco County, on the western side of Florida, and would actually be five hours up I-75, since Interstate 75 traverses mostly the western part of the state while Interstate 95 traverses the eastern part.
Music in this episode:
"Slow Ride" by Foghat
"Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
(Masuka calls Dexter's cell phone)
Deb: Morgan here.
Masuka: Wait, did I call the hot Morgan by mistake? Freudian. My subconscious has been exposed.
Deb: Well, zip it up and tell me what's going on.
Rita: I hope tuna's alright.
Rudy: I do love me a little mercury.
(Dexter calls Masuka)
Masuka: Masuka.
Dexter: Hey, it's Dexter Morgan.
Masuka: Dude, I know your last name.
Dexter: Yeah, I need a favor. A DNA comparison.
Masuka: I thought you were away for the weekend with the girlfriend. What, she surfin' the crimson wave?
Dexter: (voice over) Luckily, I get up earlier than normal people.
(enters the kitchen)
Rudy: Coffee?
Dexter: (voice over) How did a death turn into a couples weekend?
Rita: Hello.
Paul: Hey babe, it's Paul. Just making sure dear Dexter is dealing decently with his dead dad.
Rita: We're fine, everyone's fine. Alright, we'll see you on Monday.
Paul: Talk to me, you having fun? Cause I'm not.
Rita: Paul.
Paul: Would've if I'd have taken my kids to the circus. We'd be eating peanuts right now, stepping in elephant shit.
Rita: Paul, this is not helping my confidence in you.
Paul: Oh, I think you've got enough confidence for both of us.
Rita: Look if you want to work towards building more visitation days and not less, you need to avoid this kind of behavior right here. Now I think you might just politely hang up.
Paul: OK, you're right, I'm sorry. You have a great weekend. (hangs up phone)
Rudy: Well, Joe said no to the drugs, but not his rock n roll. Nothing in his collection post 1980. Gotta love a purist.
Doakes: (About Dexter) The man is a fucking creep-job!
Paul: Hey babe, it's Paul. Just making sure dear Dexter is dealing decently with his dead dad.
This alliteration style is a reference to Dexter's narration in the books. The titles Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter are alliterations, as well as many lines of narration in the book.
Title: Father Knows Best:
The title is an allusion to a popular American TV series that ran from 1954 to 1962. It was a family sitcom. It began originally as a radio show in 1948.
