  • Some mistakes.. and much development

So, this episode is about Dexter and much emphasize is put on his need to be alone and the way they explain it - I most say it is weird - they manage to explain all his difference so normally like he is.. normal person.

Anyway, this episode is good in story development - I mean, this opens up so many storylines. They get lead on ice-truck killer and Deb meets that doctor and Dexter makes mistake.. It all gets used later.

And the whole struggle Dexter has with Rita and trying to "play" relationship. It is somehow comical but also serious and those thoughts raised there.. they are really thought provoking and deep.
  • This wasn't anything amazing but well worth watching.

I like how they show that Dexter is really trying to make his relationship work. I the head things was pretty comical. what kinda of girl turns that down. I thought that his sister was really getting into the survivor but she hooked him up with the other slut so I am not so sure. I am trying to figure out who the killer is, sense I am watching this behind most some people already know, but don't tell me I cant wait to find out on my own. I am going to go with the doctor, the mexican friend, or some random that hasn't been introduced yet.
  • Beeing boring

  • Dexter takes out a couple.

Dexter tries to figure out how to make a relationship work and how to make Rita feel closer to him. He finds inspiration from his married victims who tell him that they shared a dream. They give him helpful advice but he still kill them. While he is cleaning up someone sees him. I'm not sure who. It could be the ice truck killer or someone else. I wonder if Dexter is a little too complacent. This may be the third person to know what he does.

Because of Angel's situation Dexter realizes everyone where's masks. He is more human that he thinks.

Looks like Dexter and Rita share the same dream of being normal. Dexter may yet have another level.

I loved this episode, to tell you the truth I thought this show was going to be boring, but not at all. All I use to watch on Showtime was "Weeds", but this show is brilliant also. What got me on the edge of my seat wondering who was that in the trunk watching him, was it one of the immigrants or his friends, I Don't know. Brilliant Show

I really don't know who would think of a show like this, I never even seen a show like this, not like CSI or Law & Order at all. I can't wait to watch the rest
  • A fine example of why Dexter is a Hero. (in some way)

Now if that is not one of the most funny statments. Dex is a cold blooded monster but so inturged by the human side. This is what makes the show great. He is a killer that we just can't hate. He dose take another humans life two in this ep. At the same time you if your like me sit there and say "Is this wrong?" after all they are just as evil. even if this ep is slow it did set up for the next flawlessly. Dex got sloppy just like harry warned him not to do. All in all it's clentch lines and acting that really set each ep apart. Oh and some one said this was CIS like. No way first off Dex has good acters. Secound it's not a prime time show so theres less constrans. Three he's a monster but one you want to root for.

I thought the episode was solid, but I do feel that this episode was the worst in the young series to date. I thought the beginning was very slow, with even some Dexter scenes seeming to be thrown in just randomly here and there. Once we got closer to the end of the episode - now we're talking about the show Im growing to love. Loved the endgame, with Dexter killing two people. He is also feeling the needing to bond with someone, which I think may be a feeling he has had since his Dad passed away a while back. He doesnt want to connect, but I think he is saying that he has too. Asking the two people their goals in life and then having the same conversation with Rita was really good. Once again loved the Rita and Dexter scenes in this episode - I still think they are growing to be the best on screen couple I have seen to date. The connection for both of their characters is there which is what I love. I also liked the eyeball watching Dexter at the end of the episode and I hope that is expanded on in some future episodes. Not too much to the Ice Truck Killer in this episode, which just makes me wonder what they are going to be planning next.
  • One line made this the most orginal ep ("Now I'm going to ask you a question. I want an honest answer. Do you too love each other? What is this love thing all about?)

  • Unexpectedly, Dexter finds not one, but two people worth killing.

In a surprising twist, the wife of the man Dexter intends to kill (who's smugling Cubans out of Cuba and then demanding more money or killing them) knows all about this and to Dexter is worth killing just as much as her husband. He does ultimately kill both of them, but not before asking about why they love each other. They share the same goals, apparently.

Of course, if this knowledge is combined with the eye looking through the car keyhole, an eye which looks decidedly female and supposedly belongs to the Ice Truck Killer, one's mind starts to wonder about a possible relationship between these two serial killers.
  • Dexter's trying to bond.

    9.5
    "Superb"
At first sight this episode wouldn't be on my Dexter's best episodes list. Dexter comes quite off character here trying to bond not only with Rita, but with Angel, too.

But the thing is - as we can perfectly see through the flashbacks and on his own words at the end of the episode - Dexter's one true dream is to be ordinary, not to be what he truly is, but rather to be fully normal. For the first time we see him as he sees himself, with discontempt. And that is a major leap in character development, for sure.

Also for the first time, we see a glimpse of the Ice Truck Killer. Okay, it's just one of his eyes, but I swear to you, I'm starting to believe he is a she. For real, man! If you watch closely you'll see his/her eyebrow is very thin, almost as if it was cut that way, as most women do.

I know Tony says he saw a man, but he probably is descriving Dexter. The ment drops and the throat problem would be because she is always forcing her vocal cords in order to her voice seems to be masculine. Besides, if this is true at the end of the season (probably) when Dexter confronts her he would be torn apart by the desire to be with someone like him and "The Code of Harry".

    In other words: Stay tuned!

This seriously is going on great!

Dexter (re Angel): "I wonder what I did to make him think we're so close. I wonder if it'd work on Rita".

If last week's episode was all about help, then this week on the second best Miami based series (Nip/Tuck so obviously being the first) we're into the tricky world of relationships and the impact of certain changes among them.

Take Angel for example. He's not only lying to people about him and Nina having a rock solid marriage but he's gotten to the point where he's blatantly peddling an ideal to Dexter on how relationships should be. People in glass houses, eh?

When Angel gets a bonus for the all the hard work he has managed to put in the past few weeks and comes from a dressing down with LaGuerta unscathed, it's Dexter who finds himself treated to an unlikely boy's night out as Angel is determined to drink away his blues.

In fact Angel succeeds nicely is getting sloshed and his "La Passion" discussion with Dexter as the latter tries to get relationship advice from his friend only highlights how willingly Angel is able to keep up the presence but given how leery he was with another woman, I'm surprised Dexter didn't suspect something amiss with his friend's behaviour.

However Dexter doesn't have to wait long to find out the real reason behind Angel's erratic behaviour when Nina explains that her and Angel are separated and a sympathetic Dexter allows him to crash on his couch. Well it was either that or the street so in some ways, Dexter had no choice but a part of me was hoping that Dexter did feel some genuine sympathy for Angel along with it.

One thing he certainly felt from Angel's deceit about his marriage was relief in knowing that other people can fake things pretty well but honestly, Dexter's lack of emotional attention at times might be the reason behind him not suspecting Angel was estranged from Nina rather than his friend's art of deception.

The mystery in regards to love also plays a more significant role with Rita's friend Yelina who hasn't made recent payments to a guy dubbed the Coyote and as a result the promise of her husband being imported into the country safely is looking more and more uncertain by the minute.

There's something rather topical right now with the discussion of immigrant as even over in Ireland where I live, things are becoming more and more of a cultural melting pot. There are a lot more people here from other countries now than when I was in school and that's not a bad thing. Anything that can promote diversity is a good thing, especially given how racism can still be an issue as well.

In tackling the thorny issue of illegal immigration you instantly feel bad for Yelina who seems like a nice and honest woman who only wants to be with her husband and the fact that Rita is on deck in trying to help her out by getting the authorities involved only further cements my love for this woman.

Okay what Rita was trying to do is something I think most of us would for our friends in a heartbeat but the reason why I liked Rita so much here is because the writers finally gave her a plot that doesn't involve her relationship with Dexter or her children. Not that either are boring but it's nice for different aspects of Rita to be explored and she's definitely someone I'd want as a friend.

With there being illegal immigration, there had to be a culprit and there's no-one quite as nasty as car lot owner Jorge Castillo who's constantly scamming of foreign nationals has made him a scandalously rich man so having a run down car lot is only camouflage and a place to store immigrants until he is paid in full and if he's not then they get killed.

Sadly for Yelina that means her Ernesto is murdered and washed up on the beach and she and Rita have to identify his body. While Dexter might note the greatness of faking emotions even he displayed pity for Yelina when contacting the police on her behalf.

Knowing that Castillo is responsible, Dexter pays a quick visit to the car lot and manages to cover his tracks just about by asking for a specific car when a wary Jorge wonders what he's up to.

However if Jorge wasn't suspicious of Dexter just walking by, then Dexter's attempts of catching him out by speaking Spanish certainly got his spidey sense tingling. Jorge should've probably taken Dexter down there and then as the delay only led to his much deserved downfall.

After getting more evidence from Jorge's boat, Dexter sneaks back to the car lot and snares the bastard before learning that Jorge's American wife Valerie was also in on the little scheme, leading Dexter to take it in his own hands to teach them both a lesson they won't live long enough to forget.

Of course before Dexter decided to send these two to Hell a good few years earlier than if someone else had gotten to them, he asks them how they manage to maintain such a strong, affectionate marriage and you know what, I was actually interested to know how these two would respond to such a question.

The answer is obvious- both Jorge and Valerie share the same dream and that is to get rich and it doesn't matter how that goal is achieved as long as it is with these two but it's an incredibly satisfying answer and it gives Dexter food for thought on his own romantic strains with Rita. Naturally enough, Jorge and Valerie don't survive after letting Dexter in on their secret.

As for the Rita issue, Dexter spent most of this episode fully convinced that due having no next level he would have to dump her and he more or less looked set to do it until he opted to go down on her as a gesture for the blow job she unexpectedly gave him last week.

Although Rita seems rather flattered that Dexter is taking a sexual interest, she rebuffs his advances by simply telling him that she's not in the mood. I'm not sure whether Dexter looked flattered or relieved because Michael C. Hall gave nothing away during that particular scene.

What I can tell you however is that Dexter and Rita come to an agreement during the end of the episode where they both conclude that being boring is somewhat preferable to having excitement at every turn, which both Dexter and Rita have had in their lives already. As long as that doesn't signify with a future development for the series, I think I can handle but I can't honestly see Dexter living up to his word of being boring especially given his hobby. That being said these two are one of my favourite TV couples right now.

Meanwhile Deb after having hardly anything to do last week tries to further get respect from her colleagues by befriending the recently rescued Tony Tucci and trying to get him to remember as much about his abduction as possible when Tony wasn't shamelessly flirting with her.

Doakes however being his usual abrasive and when not laying into Dexter wasn't exactly encouraging Deb to think outside the box in order to nail the Ice Truck Killer and even went a bit ballistic on her when she suggested blindfolding Tony in order to see if he could retrace anything.

It might not have been the most sensitive idea but oddly enough, it did make sense as an idea to retrace the circumstances and it ended up working when Tony was able to remember his captor's penchant for lozenges.

In any other show this would be totally trivial but because the ITK isn't as smart as he likes to think he is, Deb and company are able to research the Angel Of Mercy hospital yet again and a rat fearing Masuka (one of the funniest things this week was Masuka's ongoing fear of rats to the irritation of Doakes) was able to find a lozenge wrapper.

To this lot it was like finding the Holy Grail as the progression meant Doakes having to praise Deb and LaGuerta refraining from dismissing evidence. Also Deb managed to repay a sex starved Tony by getting her prostitute pal Shanda to get Tony's rocks off and the rather mysterious Doctor Rudy seemed a little interested in our Deb.

As for the weekly flashbacks they mostly centred on Harry trying to peak Dexter's interest in girls as he takes a girl named Wendy to the Spring Formal and wonders whether or not he'll ever truly feel anything around women. Even Harry would have a hard time in helping Dexter out with that fear.

    Also in "Love American Style"

FXUK are starting to do promotional trailers for the series with both Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter. I'd say other cast members are soon to help out with that.

Dexter: "If I found someone then so can you"

Deb: "Yeah, trouble is keeping them".

Dexter joked about wanting an Atari to Rita when he was younger. Its things like that you kinda know Dexter is faking.

Police Officer: "Believe me your maid is not the first one to get screwed"

Dexter: "She's not my maid, just a maid".

    Dexter: "I like being alone"

    Harry: "Most normal people don't".

With the exception of "Let's Give The Boy A Hand", I noticed that Doris doesn't seem to be in any of Dexter's flashbacks.

Deb: "Oh you are a dog"

Tony: "That's what the ladies tell me".

Doakes: "Tucci's closed for business and you shut him down"

Deb: "I was trying a new approach"

Doakes: "Perhaps you should try learning the basics before reinventing the damn wheel".

Rita works for the "Z" hotel and Dexter's car is LFH604 registration. I think at some point one of those might come in handy.

    Dexter: "I can fake it"

Harry: "Buddy there is a lot of things you can fake but this is a tough one".

Masuka: "Have you had garlic for lunch?"

Deb: "I'm gonna punch you in the neck"

Masuka: "Actually I think you're gonna French me".

This week the only cast members who are missing are Cody and Astor. Colleen sure does look after those kids a lot.

Dexter (re ITK): "My favourite serial killer is a Lozenge eater. How human of him".

Valerie: "We can pay you money"

Dexter: "That's what it's all about".

Dexter didn't have time to chop up Valerie and even risked of disposing her and Jorge's corpses in broad daylight.

Dexter: "No fame and fortune? Excitement at every turn?"

Rita: "No, I've had enough excitement thank you. I'll take boring".

Chronology: A week since "Let's Give The Boy A Hand".

"Love American Style" might be the strangest take on the American Dream but along with it's take on relationships, it further solidifies how interesting this unconventional series is shaping up to be. Five episodes in and I'm completely hooked, it's no wonder critics are lavishing praise on this series.
  • Kill two birds with one stone..... or should i say scalpel

With the Ice Truck Killers unsuccessful victim now in hospital Dexter visit's the crime scene to find clues, whilst Doakes and Debs interview Tony at the hospital.

Dexters mind is spinning at thoughts of the ITK but is with a problem Rita has, one of her housekeepers at the hotel she works at is in a terrible state as her Cuban fiancé has not shown up illegally from Cuba, Rita ask's for Dexters help to try find him, after some investigation work Dexter learns an illegal human trafficking ring in place and decides to take the law into his own hands killing both the ring leader and his wife solving Rita's and her housekeepers problem.

But Dexter still has his own problem to solve.
  • Another great episode

This was another excellent episode. Everyday we are descovering more things about Dex. In the previous episode he showed he is able to resist killing someone that dont deserve.

This episode revealled that although Dex cant understand Rita's fellings, their dreams match....maybe its way dexter kinda likes her...of coure in his on way...

My curiosity was "killed"...i finally knew where he "keep" the bodies....

And who belong that eye in the trunk? Could be of the ice truck man....or dexter is ruined...

I dont belive anyone is going to read this...mainly because this episode was on many time ago....but if occasionaly somebody does, please excuse me for my english...its **** horrible....i domt wanna search words and grammar rules or anything like that so i wrote the best way i could remember!
  • Once again Dexter does what he does best, this time however without that same obsession he constantly has over the ice truck killer.

    8.6
    "Great"
Dexter is as creepy as always within this episode, but also sympathetic. He in many ways is a lost soul as he goes after the criminals that he believes do not have the right to live. Despite that, this episode also shows the personal side of Dex as he tries to find his way with Rita, although at times not as succesfully as he likes. This show provides once again that feeling that Dexter is not normal like everyone else, but instead just putting on his mask. In many ways the episode is more of the same, but the more of the same works profoundly, so why change it.
  • Just when you think he's going to change, he doesn't.

    9.8
    "Superb"
I loved the end when he killed the couple. Just when you thought he was maybe not going to kill them he does. The questions he asked was great. And now we got the scoop on where he dumps the bodies. Just how many are down there I wonder? It makes you think on nobody is safe, Dexter watches people and the Ice Truck killer watched Dexter. I am amazed that this show about killing is actually funny. And making him kill only bad people is even better. I guess the Ice Truck Killer isn't the same because he has killed hookers and tortured a security guard.
  • Dexter made a mistake...

    9.0
    "Superb"
Dexter should have never deviated from the plan. For all of the episodes Dexter is always talking about how meticulous he is about his killings. Watching them to know when to grab them so know one knows. Picking a place to kill them that is way out of the way. Making sure that every inch is cover in plastic that can be removed so not one piece of evidence is left behind. Every other crime has gone according to plan and he hasn’t been caught. This one time he deviates from the plan and it cost him. He killed two and not one, that changed his time line and he didn’t have enough time to dismember the body. Big mistake. Plus he also is getting a bit sloppy because the IceTruck killer is obviously watching him and he doesn’t know…
  • That eye was creepy !!!!! And i love Dexter hehehe

In thsi episode we get to see more about his past, he learing to pretend to be "normal" and in the present he really trying to do that.

Really liked the part when he asked to the couple he was about to kill about their relationship and then talked with Rita about their plans for the future, i think they belong together :)

That eye in the trunk of the car was scary, and to me it kinda looked like a woman's eye, so is it possible that the ice truck killer is a woman ? or that eye was from someone else not related to that story?

GREAT eppy and i can't wait for next week.
  • this one was nerve wrecking; someone sees dexter killing two people. i love the theme of dexter which is played in the beginning...anyone has an idea who composed it?

    8.3
    "Great"
there may be trouble for dexter in the upcoming episodes...because someone has seen him killing a couple, who deserve it of course.

the ice truck killer's victim remembers something about him which may lead to some evidence.

each time i watch a new episode i realize one of my fave characters is harry (dexter's foster dad)...who would accept a monster in their family..i mean really accept..as a son?!
  • An episode of real enjoyment for the sheer unexpected humor of it all. Unique in the fact that we see Dexter try something new in his relationship, something new with colleagues and something new in his "hobby."

    9.6
    "Superb"
What a treat to watch a show about a sociopath trying to navigate the waters of love. Although I am still struggling to totally enjoy Deb's character (she vascilates between being strong and gritty to being weak and meek), I really enjoyed this episode.

First was Dexter going out for drinks with Angel, not only because it showed him trying to navigate a social situation, but because it saw him seeking relationship advice. When Angel describes what is required to keep from having to be there "emotionally" for your partner, I laughed.

The search for the Ice Truck Killer (ITK) continues and this story-line is being very well drawn along without the arch becoming stereotypical or too formula.

Dexter's selection of his next candidate for "Dexterization" is interesting and the morbid scene on a fishing boat was necessary without being gratuitous.

Later when Dexter attempts to impliment Angel's advice with Rita (both in an attempt to avoid a completely uncomfortable emotional moment, and to reciprocate for Rita's kindness last episode), I laughed even harder.

Dexter faces a very interesting situation when confronted with the wife of the man who is about to be "Dextered" and this leads to him trying something new in his "hobby," killing two people at one time. However it is the lead up to the killing, where Dexter finds himself earnestly seeking relationship advice again, this time from people who will very shortly die at his hands, that had me almost fall off my chair with laughter.

What I love about this show is how the scenes border on the absurd and yet never quite cross that line into the realm of overkill (pun intended).

This episode ranks as one of my personal favorites in the series so far.
  • Dexter is back on his track and we get some clues about the ice truck killer.

    9.0

The writing on this show continues to impress me. I love how they tied all theme of the relationships into the episode and still advanced the plot on all fronts.

Glad to see Dexter is back on his mission after last week's 0-for. And we start to see how good of a detective he is, and not just a blood-guy. Of course he put himself at a big risk and now someone knows his secret. I can't wait to see where this goes. Especially after seeing that preview from the next episode.

And I was laughing out loud at the scene with Dexter and Rita watching the movie. Boy, is Dexter bad at reading some signals. I guess his choice wasn't light-comedy enough.

And we finally get some clues to the ice-truck killer. I suspect that doctor - or maybe I'm just jealous of that look he gave Debra.
  • Slowing down

    8.0
    "Great"
Don't get me wrong, I still adore the show, and the episode was great, I just felt it decelerated in comparison to the episodes so far.

A good addition was Dexter's punishment of TWO killers this time, and it was amusing to see him stumble with the intricacies of relationships (thinking tearjerking moments in Terms of Endearment would be a good time for a clamdive), and beseeching his soon-to-be-victims to explain how they love each other, what it means to them.

Good to see more development of Angel, even if only from Dexter's perspective. Not sure what the point of the whole "A maid, not MY maid" thing was, whether humour or something else (in which case, I didn't get it), but it fell flat for me. Dexter's tech friend's rat phobia brought some enjoyable levity to proceedings.

Overall a good episode, just not brilliant.
