"Perfect"
Dexter (re hotel room): "I can't go back in there"
Deb: "You don't have to".
We've had our fair share of blood on this series and we've also had at least two different reactions from Dexter regarding that also signifies life as well as death but this week, the show has some real fun with the phrase "blood on the walls".
The Ice Truck Killer hasn't been messing with the police and Dexter since it attempted to test out the latter with the corpses of husband/wife tag team Jorge and Valerie Castillo but it doesn't mean that it hasn't been forgetting about Dexter or his lust for kill.
Instead of getting off screen murders, the very ambitious Rudy has become a rather adept boyfriend for Deb and has also been doing his best to become quite the confidant for Dexter but this week its back to reminding the Miami PD that his alter ego is most definitely still at large.
Another hacked up hooker with painted nails or limbs posted in various locations would've been a somewhat obvious signal to the authorities that the ITK is back in business so being rather inventive, the delivery of a jar covered in blood and containing a hotel key 103 is the kind of thing you'd expect in a Stephen King novel so hats for pure cleverness as this shows blends impressiveness and creepiness in equal measures.
However that jar of blood is the least of the cops' problems when Deb and Doakes are given the assignment of having to find what on earth is in Room 103. It doesn't take a genius to figure it isn't going to be a sock collection but even Deb and Doakes (whose dynamic is pretty great here) are shocked by what they find.
When you've got a psychopath like the ITK hacking and slashing his way through Miami and leaving a plethora of cryptic clues, you never know what to expect but an entire room literally covered from head to toe in blood and no bodies lying around is out there even for the man named Rudy.
The first reaction I had was 'who the hell did Rudy slaughter in there – a blooming fraternity?' and judged by their naturally disturbed reactions, I had the feeling that both Deb and Doakes might have had a similar reaction given how vocalised they both made their disgust made by what they had seen.
However there's one person's reaction that I definitely wanted to see and as soon as Dexter made his way to the crime scene, I knew Doakes would throw in a sly dig in regards to the man's fascination with blood. Doakes' snappish behaviour with Dexter might not always be professional but he does have a point. Dexter isn't usually creeped out by blood and that's been an advantage to both of his jobs.
Sadly for him, there's something about this particular scene that ignites a much different reaction. Instead of squealing like fan boy at a convention, Dexter not only lost his nerve around the sight of blood but he freaked out so much, he ended up falling headfirst into it as well.
Now that reaction really did floor me and the way he reacted to the sight did raise a lot of suspicions. This might be the worst thing we've seen as an audience but I get the impression that Dexter has seen (and maybe) been responsible for worse actions, so what was it about this sight that made him queasy? A flashback to a traumatised child would indicate he might've been in this hotel before.
In terms of his team's reaction, Vince was pretty indifferent and Doakes was quick to mention that perhaps Dexter was human after all. Only Deb actually showed some genuine concern for her brother but unfortunately this wouldn't turn out to be something that would bring her and Dexter closer together.
In the past four episodes we've had Dexter and Deb clash with each other over work and personal matter. Deb wasn't exactly best pleased that Dexter managed to quash two theories in regards to the ITK and she got pretty animated when Dexter tried to confirm biology with Joe Driscoll last week, so it's not a stretch then Deb would see Dexter's freak out as an opportunity to build bridges with her older brother.
The thing is that while I can side with Deb, she does have a tendency of pushing the issue of not being close to Dexter a bit too hard and instead of him wanting to open up to her, Dexter opt to shut down yet again.
With Dexter it always seems to be the case of refusing to engage emotionally because he doesn't want to give anyone a hint that he might not be as normal as he wants the world to think he is but not only is he running the risk of alienating people with that stance but by constantly not opening up to Deb, he'll either end up losing her or making Deb suspicious of him in the same way that Doakes is.
He should've tried to at least give Deb something that would've at least thrown her off the track and out of the dog house but by refusing to open up to her, he ended up pissing her off even more.
Unlike Dexter, Rudy seems to balance his duality a little better because he didn't take Deb's side and they ended up fighting, he used the opportunity and the guise of beer and steaks to pick Dexter's brain on Deb, himself, his job and repressed memories. Even better was how he then used his hang time with Dexter to grace himself back into Deb's good books. Rudy's a clever boy and Deb is only a teeny bit gullible. If this was any other show, I'd be calling Deb a court jester but I kinda like her too much to be too critical. Either way, the poor girl is in serious **** and I feel bad for her.
Then there's the flashbacks to the traumatised child, who turns out be a three year old Dexter witnessing much bloodshed in the same hotel (I assume) as his mother does her best to protect him. It's an incredibly scene to sit through and I have to admit to getting chills when watching it.
Rudy meanwhile had his own demons to face when Angel happened to pay him a visit and not one relating to his own medical problems. For Rudy, Angel could've picked a worse time to come sniffing around him.
Yes Angel finally gets put to some decent use following his divorce when on a lad's night out with Masuka, the cop spotted an ex-hooker with an artificial hand and multi-coloured nails and pretty soon the former lady of the night began to spout off about one of her johns.
It's brilliant that stuff from previous episodes are playing a more prominent in the central mystery and the fact that it's Angel who gets a lucky break is good. I got the impression during their chat that Angel had maybe picked up some creepy vibes from Rudy but if he did, he wasn't too vocal about them.
Rudy on the other hand, feeling that Angel posed a threat stabbed him in the car lot and without the help of passers by, would've killed him. Still a fat lip might help in actually joining the dots between him and the ITK. Plus the fact that Masuka was able to help point Angel in Rudy's direction too.
Then the ITK also has the added interest of the public again thanks to LaGuerta. Maria knew well and proper he was still on the loose and despite the Captain devolving into a proper **** over the situation, she put her neck on the line to tell the public that the ITK was being reopened.
Maria's actions are hardly selfless seeing as part of her motives involved getting no credit for previous good work and being belittled by Matthews but I still think she did the right thing and even an angry Matthews has to see that either. You shouldn't conceal the fact that a serious threat is still on the loose. Then again, Maria and Tom should also lay off scoring points from one another and work together but that's not likely to happen just yet.
Speaking of teamwork, anyone else want to help me start a petition to get Paul off this show and fast? As if trying to rape Rita wasn't bad enough, the evil dick then decides to file assault charges against her and because Rita violated a visiting order when she and Dexter went to Joe's house, she also finds herself in danger of losing the kids.
It's a pretty **** up world when a scumbag who shouldn't be on the street, let alone permitted visits to his children like Paul is allowed to get away with a worse crime that what Rita did. Hers wasn't out of maliciousness but Paul's was and a part of me felt as if he was being rewarded.
To further cement Paul's true nastiness, he tried to blackmail Rita into allowing him unsupervised visits and when he got into Dexter's face, he found himself being drugged and thrown back into jail. Dexter really has fallen for Rita and his determination to protect her, Cody and Astor came from the most underhanded of tactics.
It's hard to sympathise with Paul but it's incredibly easy to take absolute pleasure in this guy's misfortune and even though Dexter might have done a morally wrong thing, Paul has been little more than a hindrance and with any luck this will be the last of which we'll have to put with him. Plus Rita wasn't exactly devastated by her ex-husband being behind bars and the drugs Dexter used did belong to Paul. In some ways Dexter speeded up inevitability.
Also in "Seeing Red"
We're back with the lengthy "Previously On" bits and it's amazing how much has happened in such a time on the series.
Astor: "Are you gonna make out?"
Dexter: "None of your business"
Astor: "Are you?"
There was also a Buffy episode called "Seeing Red" and not only did I love that to bits like this episode but it played heavy on the red symbolism.
Doakes (to Dexter): "Something finally got to you. I guess you're human after all"
Deb: Cut him some slack".
Masuka: "Come take a look"
Dexter: "Photos, Vince, take lots and lots of photos".
No Harry flashbacks this week and Dexter expressed a little bit of bitterness over the Joe Driscoll thing.
Rudy: "You were the one who said you wanted to talk"
Deb: "Not when I'm horny".
Rudy (re Deb): "What do I do?"
Dexter: "Tell her it's all your fault".
Rudy told Dexter about the memory of losing his mother during their hang out. Both of them had opposing views on their repressed memories.
Ex-hooker (to Angel): "No way, my john was sexy. A freak but sexy".
Rudy: "I'm afraid I got into this business to help people get better, not to get off"
Angel: "I'm sure your girlfriend will be happy to hear that".
Angel seems to be as much as a fan of Neil Diamond as his estranged wife Nina and Masuka came off as less weird than usual. Plus the ex-hooker's date looked like Paul.
Dexter (re Rita/Paul): "Harry's first rule was don't get emotionally involved. I think this is why".
Rita: "Where were you?"
Dexter: "Taking out the trash".
Technically if Neil Perry did decide to sue the precinct, they could always counter sue and it's not like he can avoid jail time anyway given the dirt on him.
LaGuerta: "Nice, Tom, real nice. Your true colours are finally coming out"
Captain Matthews: "Oh no you haven't seen my true colours but you're about to".
Chronology: Two days after "Father Knows Best".
This episode might have overemphasised the notion of "Seeing Red" but damn, this is one hell of an instalment. More on Dexter's traumatic childhood is welcomed and the closer to Rudy being unveiled as the ITK, the better.
