  • Dexter faces his mothers killer.

A really good episode where Dexter finds his mothers killer and with help from Lila she persuades him to face his mothers killer but Dexter didn't take Lila's advice and Dexter learned that his mum was with Harry Dexter then knows that Harry had lied to him again Lila was surprisingly able to persuade Dexter not to kill him This lead to Dexter finding out more secrets this time about Lila where she tells him she has killed someone by accident and she got away with it but Dexter is the last person she wants to tell that story to It was a very interesting ending with the camera so now Dexter is going to have to act fast to make sure nobody sees that footage.moreless
  • Nutshell review: Dexter 2x5 - The Dark Defender

Good episode, with some cool dramatic moments (Dexter confronting his past - literally)

But, problem is: Lila is starting to get a bit too annoying. I like the whole "life coach" approacH(or whatever you want to call it) but Lila is almost like Dexter's mother which in my humble opinion kills the drama and suspense a bit. It's all too convinient. I don't want Dexter to turn into the Dexter/Lila show.

The Dark Defender "vision" was hilarious and well done + points earned for that. The ending while definitely "edge of the seat"-quality, a bit too out of character(bit too sloppy for Dexter!) 8/10moreless
  • Season Two Struggles To Get On Track

Season two has really focused on character pairs. Dexter + Rita and Dexter + Lila are two of the strongest pairs in the group. I'm really not sure what to make of the Lundy + Deb pair that we have seen so much of this season. I don't get what Lundy is supposed to be for Deb - a father figure? I viewed him as being more of the bad guy this season for Dexter, but all he has really done is be there for Deb to assist her thourgh her troubles. Doakes + Maria - Not a pair of characters who I very interested in at all. I liked how Dexter went to approach the man who killed his father, but his struggles to kill this season are starting to get very...annoying? Isn't that why we watch the show. Maybe I should understand the dynamic of what he is going through right now in terms of character devolopment, but I guess that part I hate the most is that he feels "reborn" one minute and then "I can't kill again" two seconds later. Five episodes into season two and I must say those of you who say s2 > s1 must be watching something that I am not.moreless
  • Watch out rita the new girl it trying for your man.

I am really loving the new girl. I think that she is perfect for Dexter. I hope that he drops the old girlfriend and gets with the new chick. This was a really good episode, I can't believe that Dexter didn't kill that guy I was really expecting him to I wonder how long it is going to be before he kills again. I hate Rita's mom I can't believe that she is moving it with her; she needs to tell her to get her own place. The whole things crazy, and I love Dexter's sister's new boyfriend her is really cute.moreless
  • Shadows from past and present

So.. This episode maybe was little slower than previous ones and it somehow reflected the action.

The whole thing between Dexter and Lila was brilliant. I like the weird situation Dexter is caught and the game he was playing but the thing seems to get more and more out of his control and it really looked like he is intrigued that there is someone who sees behind the mask and actually might understand him. That's dangerous: for everyone else. That, probably, would mean giving up all normal (I mean Rita and children).. and turning to that twisted world but hey.. nothing in this serie is not twisted.

Also the developments on other sides were good. I loved Deb and her trusting issues and irony. And that FBI guy seems to get some more depth too.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • If Harry was already a detective when he met Dexter's mother, he shouldn't be in uniform when he took Dexter out of the shipping container in a previous flashback.

    • LaGuerta mentions that, counting the incident with Curtis Barnes, Doakes has been involved in two shootings in less than six months. The other shooting occurred in the episode "Father Knows Best", in which Doakes shot and killed Jacques Bayard, a Haitian war criminal.

  • QUOTES (10)

    • Lila: (about a painting of a cottage hanging on the motel wall) This isn't art, it's cottage porn.

    • Deb: If Dad taught us one thing, it's the value of human life.
Dexter: (voice over) Yeah, but I think we had different homework assignments.

    • Lila: So what about what you're going to say to this guy when you get there?
Dexter: I'm sure I'll think of something.
Lila: Why don't you practice on me.
      Dexter: I'd rather not.
      Lila: Just try. Out loud.
Dexter: I feel like... he stole my life.
      Lila: And...
Dexter: I'm not the person I'm supposed to be. It's like I'm hollow.
      Lila: That's good. Go on.
Dexter: I hide in plain sight, unable to reach out to people close to me, afraid I'll hurt them... like I've hurt so many others. This is what he made me become.

    • Deb: Sweet Mary mother of fuck that's good.
Dexter: I think you might have broken a commandment somewhere in there.

    • Dexter: (voice over) Most people hate long lines. The bank, grocery store, coffee bar. Not me. Want a real glimpse of human nature? Stand in the way of someone's mocha latte. It also reminds me that the good people of Miami and I aren't so different. They have no more idea of what I am than I do.

    • Dexter: (voice over) The Dark Defender...Nah Miami's too hot for all that leather.

    • Dexter: (voice over) Harry taught me to lie and keep my darkest secrets from those around me, which is why I need to make sure there's not a trace of blood left on my boat. He also taught me not to rush to judgment. Things aren't always what they appear to be, including Harry. And what about me? Am I the twisted Bay Harbor Butcher or the valiant Dark Defender? Only time will tell. Funny thing is I've met someone who doesn't care what I am. I suppose every hero needs a sidekick, every villain a partner in crime. All my relationships have been built on not knowing, but that may be changing. Imagine that. A life with no more secrets.

    • Dexter: See you tonight?
Deb: Think I'm staying at Gabriel's...
Dexter: Thought you were taking it slow...
Deb: We are. No sex, just cuddling.
Dexter: My little sister, the cuddler.

    • Dexter: (voice over) I never really got the whole super hero thing. But lately it does seem we have a lot in common: tragic beginnings, secret identities, part human, part mutant...(looks over at Doakes) arch enemies.

    • Dexter: (voice over) The rocks I used to submerge my victims may eventually sink me too. But if I'm learning anything in recovery, it's one day at a time.

  • NOTES (2)

    • The scene where Dexter enters the bar, with the red lighting, Rolling Stones playing in the background and with the slow zoom, is similar to the scene where Johnny Boy enters the bar in the film Mean Streets, directed by Martin Scorsese. "Gimme Shelter" is also staple Martin Scorsese soundtrack choice.

    • Kryptonite

Dexter: (voice over) This little, green algae may as well be kryptonite. If it's ever traced back to me, I'll be helpless.

Kryptonite is a meteor rock in the DC Comic universe that weakens Superman when he is exposed to it.
