Basically, Dexter either needed to live happily ever after, or more fittingly, go out in a blaze of glory. The real ending did neither of these, and that's part of the reason it sucked so bad. What I think should have happened is that Dexter should have killed Saxon, but becuz Deb was at the scene, some evidence should have come to light implicating Deb in Saxon's murder. She's taken into custody, and that strains her newly on-again relationship w/ Quinn. Just as Dexter is leaving for Argentina, he finds out that Deb is in custody, and has to use his forensics skills to implicate himself and get Deb off the hook. Quinn goes after Dexter, and they end up in Dexter's boat. There's a fight, and Dexter kills Quinn.

As the boat rushes into the storm, Dexter realizes that he's killed an innocent man, and he's screwed up Deb's life (caused her to kill LaGuerta, got her arrested for murdering Saxon, and killed the man she loves). He realizes that his dark passenger will never leave him, and he will never live happily ever after w/ Hannah. And now that he's killed Quinn, he deserves to die too. He cuts power to the engines and lets the storm take him. The last shot shows the boat breaking up and Dexter sinking to the bottom -- the same way he disposed of all his victims. In effect, he is his own last victim.moreless

Debra ends up dying and dexter throws her in the oceanHannah is left raising Harrison in another country because dexter thinks that he will always have trouble in his life and doesn't want anyone else he loves to suffer because of it thus he fakes his own death and lives a new and seemingly isolated life as a lumberjack. To me that's kind of a messed up way to end the series lol.I personally would want debra still living and dexter to be happy but that's just meAll in all it was a good series, something different and definitely worth the watch

Dexter and Deb should have died in the water when she tried to kill them both by swerving the car early in the episode. That might have made a better ending than Dexter becoming a lumberjack! So many things in this episode didn't make sense. Dexter would not leave Harrison alone with Hannah in a foreign country, without any family ties. What kind of life would that be for Harrison? How did he survive sailing into the hurricane? So silly. As was him unplugging Deb's breathing tube without any of the hospital staff being alerted by a code blue or whatever.Dexter's killing of Vogel's son is on the police tape. He could have stabbed him in the shoulder, but he deliberately stabs him in the jugular. Why would Batista ignore that? The whole thing with Deb realizing she loves Joey and wants to be with him. I thought she was in love with Dexter, or so she said.Hannah is a wanted fugitive but she never changes her appearance. And how can a woman who brutally stabbed someone when she was a teenager (and killed others) be so loving with Harrison, who is not her biological son? Why would Dexter leave his son with someone who could snap?Aside from being a funny scene, why would Deb eat anything Hannah prepared? Why would Vogel's son frame Zach for Cassie's murder then kill Zach? I thought he was supposed to be super smart. There were just too many silly things in this episode/season. It's a shame because I've loved the program from the beginning and this ending was a big disappointment.moreless

almost a worse ending than merlin, except instead of being ruined in the last few seconds, it took a whole episode

The ending should've had Dexter and Hannah being sent to Belize in front of Harrison, essentially setting-up a repeating cycle of what happened to Dexter. You know, anything other than free-for-all body snatching and lumberjacking.

"Sent to Belize"? I haven't heard this one. You mean them being killed?

You know after 3 days i am still pissed off about the finale so much, that i decided to write my own ending to the show:The last 3 episodes didn't happen and Zach is still alive and learning the tricks of the trade from Dexter.Dexter isn't "healed by the power of love", but instead initiates Zach by letting him kill "The Brain Surgeon" the right way - with a kill room and everything.Dex can now let go of his demons because he has a successor that will "hold evil at bay" with Harry's code, and leaves Miami for good with Hanna and his (annoying) son.Masuka learns that what's-her-face isn't really his daughter, she just used to work for the sperm bank and thought she could swindle him for money, but they grow fond of each other and decide to replace their quirky semi-incestuous relationship with a real relationship - and so Masuka finds love at last. The last few moments of the show sees everyone in the station gathered to greet their new blood splutter analyst - and in comes Zach, who Dex recommended to Angel.Only one man isn't too happy to greet the new addition to the force - Quinn, who tells him in a Doakes-like manner that he is a freak and a murderer and he will prove that to everybody if it's the last thing he does. The episode end with Zach giving that Dexter signature breaking-the-fourth-wall smile to the camera and the iconic ending theme playing in the background. This is the ending i prefer to remember - what do you think?moreless

This is a much better ending. I love how the carrying-on of the torch involves near identical setup with the new Dex and the new Doakes.

Very good! Logged in just to upvote you. This made it a lot better! As far as tainted memories go, I prefer to stick with John Lithgow's awesomeness as Trinity. That will always be the best of Dexter for me.
