my first guess is Low Ratings is that why, or because someone important was leaving the show?

Yes it did have a good run. Apparently it ended because the average viewer had stopped watching and also the costs were too high that's why there wasn't much Jesse and Amanda in the eighth season.

I think it was low ratings, you can see from the last episode The Blair Nurse Project that they were expecting another season since it didn't seem like a last ever episode. But I am glad that they got the two TV Movies after the series end, at least they could go out the way they wanted.

The series suffered from low ratings from the premiere episode. Below are the season airings and season ratings average.

Season 1: Fridays at 8.00pm and 10.5 Household rating (19 episodes)

Season 2: Fridays at 8.00pm and 10.3 Household rating (22 episodes)

Season 3: Fridays at 8.00pm and a 8.7 Household rating (18 episode beginning in December)

Season 4: Thursdays at 8.00pm and a 9.4 Household rating

Season 5: Thursdays at 9.00pm and a 10.1 Household rating

    Season 6: Thursdays at 9.00pm [episodes 1-12] Thursdays at 8.00pm [episodes 13-22] and a 9.0 HH rating

Season 7: Thursdays at 9.00pm and 9.0 HH rating.

Season 8: Thursday at 8.00pm [episodes 1 and 11] Thursdays at 10.00pm [episodes 2-8] Thursdays at 9.00pm [episodes 9-10] Fridays at 8.00pm [episodes 12-22] and a HH rating of 6.6.

The show was consistent in the ratings but its the 18-49 demo ratings that matters and DM HH ratings were good but the 18-49 were low. When the show moved to Thursdays it was up against NBCs Thursdays night comedy night which many of the comedies were in the Top 10 most watched shows and DM suffered as a result, but maintained ratings CBS were happy with. During the first 7 seasons the shw was successful however when season 8 premiered, the premiere brought in the lowest ratings ever and remained that low for the season, with CBS moving the series around a few times to see if the show would reclaim the ratings it had earlier in the shows run. However this proved unsuccessful. And CBS moved the show one last time, back to its original Friday at 8.00pm slot but the ratings didn't recover and remained at the lows, the first half of season 8 was receiving. To add insult to injury, the final episode The Blair Nurse Project pulled in the series lowest rating ever, with a 4.9 in the HH rating and 6.6 million viewers down immensly from the 14/15 million viewers the show used to get during seasons 4 and 5.
