Plenty of gags, some biting satire and briljant use of characters, they're all here. But the episode doesn't quite work because it centres around the one Dinnerladies character that fails: Petula. Was this role written to give Julie Walters something to do? The character doesn't appear in all episodes, and those episodes benefit from that. Petula is an over-the-top character, played by an actress who's far too young for the role. Having an episode in which she sets off the entire plot doesn't make sense. Why would a young boy be interested in this old, unappealing woman? Why would a commercial firm risk so much just to avoid bothering the mother of an employee of their canteen? The resolution, a cheap version of the Oprah Show, even feels a bit like one of those episodes of Are You Being Served in which the staff start their own company or put on a show.

A show that works because of its attention to detail and its naturalism disappoints when it gives over the episode to a 'gag character'.moreless
