After Robbie decides he can live on his own, he soon discovers a plant that, when eaten, makes you happy. He is quick to bring it home and share it with Earl, whose new attitude toward life has very disastrous results.
I think that this episode A New Leaf is one of the best episodes on the entire series. Robbie and Spike find a plant that makes them feel real good. Robbie decides to let his dad have some and it makes the dad feel better. Robbie and Earl then give it to Charlene and it makes her feel better. Everyone is eating the plant except Fran and Baby. Fran get's upset with Earl because he quits his job and Robbie, Charlene and Earl have eaten all of the food. Fran then leaves with the baby. Earl, Robbie and Charlene realize that the plant is making them worse than they were before after they see Spike still on the ground from when he was with Robbie and they first found the plant. They decide not to use the plant anymore but Fran decides that they have to burn it. After that we get the cut signal from the director and the filming of the episode ends. Robbie then gives us the audience a public service announcement that tells us not to do drugs so that television companies don't have to make more episodes telling us not to do drugs. I really like the ending to this episode.moreless
This episode ends with Robbie making a short public service announcement asking people to stop doing drugs to help put an end to sitcoms with preachy anti-drug messages.
Edit
Robbie: Don't do drugs -- and help stop preachy sitcom episodes like this one.

Fran: Why aren't you in school?
Charlene: Oh. I knew we were supposed to be someplace.
Robbie: Hey, Charlene, we're always someplace. (together) Whoa!

B.P.: Sinclair, I ought to kill you and your whole family, but I'd probably get in trouble with the union. As it is, there's only one thing I can do to you. You're fired Sinclair! Fired, fired, fired!
Earl: Fired? That means I don't have to come to work anymore. Oh, this is the best day ever!
Edit
Baby: This is your brain, this is your brain on the plant. (hits Earl on the head with the frying pan) Any questions?
What the baby says is a reference to an anti-drug PSA where a man fries an egg as an example of the brain on drugs. The PSA ends with the line: "Any questions?"
Edit
A Date With Judy:
The song that Earl and Robbie sing is called "It's A Most Unusual Day," from the 1948 MGM Movie A Date With Judy.
Edit
Jimi Hendrix:
After eating the "happy plant," Mr. Richfield acts suspiciously like famous musician Jimi Hendrix even going so far as to sing Hendrix's trademark song, "Purple Haze."
