  • Mike Rowe goes batty.

    9.4
Mike gets to go Texas to search for guano which is a nice word for bat poop. He meets up with a bat biologist as they investigate a cave for the guano where they are being constantly urinated on. Mike is hilarious as he notes this. Then he gets stuck in the guano which had me laughing the entire time he tried to escape the bat poop, losing his boot in the process. During the hilarity of the show you do learn about bats and their feeding habits and how far they fly at night to get to their feeding grounds. So you get the best of both worlds, laughter and information.moreless
  • Lets get dirty with Mike!

    10
Mike is about 60 miles away from Houston joining a bat biologist named Jim. They are at Bracken Cave for todays Dirty Job. Mike is told of some of the dangers of the cave befor he enters in. Some dangers are Carbon Dioxide, Flesh eating beetles and some others. Mike and Jim start walking into the cave to start the job.

The bat droppings are ankle deep as Mike points out to us. Jim must enter the cave several times each year to make sure the bat population stays about the same. As they go down in the cave more, it starts to rain but its realy bat urine falling on them. They find a bat and captures it so they can do an inspection on the bat. On the way out, Mike's boot gets stuck in the the bat poo.

Later on Mike goes on to Veteran's Stadium to see how they make the new balls ready to be used on the field. They rub mud all over the balls so it is easier to see so the batters do not get hit by the ball. This also makes throwing the ball easier. Its not a very dirty job but it sure is a neat one to learn about. The last part has Mike at the Pacific Coast Seafood processing plant. Mike learns how to fillet the fish but he is not all that good at doing so. Unused fish get put into a grinder and turned into fish food and fertilizer.moreless
