A tabloid shows that Ellen Darling was killed in a fire that destroyed the Darling home in Valhalla. Then the show cuts to Letitia getting arrested and the city is filled with conspiracy theories of what's going on with the Darling family.
Nick is on his way out to plan Ellen's funeral when Lisa tells him that she wants another baby. He brushes her off, saying he has to go to work. The family decides to have Kenny G. performing at her funeral because that was her favorite artist.
Tripp states that he wants Nick taking Letitia's case to Brian.
Jeremy is staying with his new lady, which is hurriedly leaving to go to work. She doesn't tell him what she does for a living.
Later, Tripp tells the family that he has to name a successor and tells them that Nick will decide who that person will be.
The family members scramble to convince Nick that they're the best for the job. Karen talks to Simon Elder and asks him to talk to Nick. Simon tells Nick that Karen would be terrible for the job and to pick someone else.
Now at court, Nick introduces Jeremy to Nola Lyons, which happens to be the woman he's been sleeping with as well as the lawyer against his mother. In court, the bail is set at twenty million dollars which is paid right away and Letitia is placed on house arrest. As the family leaves, they are swamped by reporters.
Patrick asks Tripp for advice and says that he can't right anything nice about Ellen. Nick suggests that he think of Carmelita when he's writing and speaking.
At the funeral, everyone is impressed by Patrick's eulogy. However, the cops arrive because Letitia is there and try to arrest her. Nick convinces Nola that they're no point in arresting a grief stricken women on tv. Unfortunately, Brian gets in a fight with a police officer and Nick somehow gets into it also. Brian and Nick spend time in jail, but are later released.
Jeremy goes to confront Nola and asks her if she approached him just because of his mother or if she really liked him. They end up kissing and making out.
Nick tells Tripp he's going to take Letitia's case. The next day, Tripp states that Nick is the successor of the company and everyone is shocked. Later, at the party, Nick meets one of Tripp's old friends behind closed doors.
