  • The Osmonds, Kurt Russell, E.J. Peaker, Disneyland, and the premier of The Haunted Mansion. It doesn't get any better.

On March 22, 1970 a one hour special on The Wonderful World of Disney that featured the Haunted Mansion. I was only nine years old, and two of my most favorite things in the world were Disneyland, and ghosts. It was a match made in heaven.

The show was hosted by Kurt Russell, who as we all know got his start at Disney, and co-starred the Osmond brothers and E.J. Peaker. I first noticed the show was going to air from previews shown the week before. I could hardly wait for Sunday to roll around, and made it very clear to all of my family that come 7:30 Sunday evening we were going to watch The Wonderful World of Disney.

This was the first show I actually taped! You might think I am lying since affordable video tape recorders weren't yet on the market, but I had a audio cassette tape recorder that I had received for Christmas the year before, and I set it up right next to the television speaker so that I could record the show on audio tape. The show was great. The plot involved Donny becoming lost in the park due to his enthusiasm to see the brand new Haunted Mansion. His brother Jay goes off to look for him on his own, and soon meets up with young Donny. The rest of the show involves the Osmonds, Kurt, and Ms. Peaker searching for Donny and Jay, and they covered a lot of the park in their effort to find them in time for the Big Show they are to have later that night. While searching for Donny we are treated to several musical numbers, and a lot of great shots of Disneyland in it's heyday. The show's climax is a fairly detailed tour of the Haunted Mansion, preceded by Kurt showing the audience some of the tricks that went into making the Attraction.

This was not only Disneyland's heyday, but also that of the show. The feel of Walt Disney was still very much apart of the company, and would not start to fade until nearly twenty years later. The show was not stingy by any means when it came time to tour the Haunted Mansion, and as a climax it was quite satisfying.moreless
