This is the story of Mary, a little girl in Scotland (played by the actress who was "Jane" in Mary Poppins) who adopts a cat originally named Thomas, but upon the discovery that it is female, was re-dubbed "Thomasina". Her father, a widower, is the local veterinarian. When a mishap puts Thomasina in grave danger and the children think Thomasina has died, they give her a grand Scottish funeral. But the thought that her father wouldn't help her "save" Thomasina causes Mary to become completely withdrawn and silent. Then an isolated local woman, young and attractive but reputed to be a witch, finds Thomasina in her "coffin" and rescues the kitty, who is still alive. The story is told from the viewpoint of Thomasina, who is drawn back to town and eventually manages to get everyone to realize that the "witch" isn't a witch, and causes the father to swallow his pride and ask for help regarding Mary.moreless
