  • Yet another top of the range episode which again finds Martin doing what he does best-being not only a great doctor but also a caring and concerned man in spite of his faux paus with Louisa in the taxi!moreless

The jig is up! Pretentious prat Adrian Pitts spills the beans on Martin's aversion to blood causing a flurry of 'phone calls to radio host Caroline and an inappropriate gag staged by Bert.At the end of the day, though,Martin saves the life of young Peter Cronk in the back of an ambulance on the way to hospital without throwing up as the result of a hasty procedure to repair Peter's ruptured spleen.

One of Martin's former pupils, the obnoxious Mr Pitts, who is now a surgeon, arrives in Portwenn and after Martin dismisses him takes his revenge by telling the locals about Martin's blood phobia. In the meantime Peter injures himself at school after being encourged by Louisa to participate in gym class.Martin is called to the school but finds nothing seriously wrong and berates both Peter and Louisa for wasting his time.

Later that evening Peter takes a turn for the worse causing Mrs Cronk to have a panic attack. She calls Louisa who, upon seeing how urgent the situation is,calls Martin who summons an ambulance.

When Peter loses blood pressure in the back of the ambulance Martin is forced to undertake an emergency operation and confront his blood phobia head on.He even manages to apologise to Peter for being so rude the day before.Louisa provides valuable assistance and, together with the paramedic and the good doctor, save Peter's life.

At the hospital it is that smarmy git Mr Pitts who completes the procedure and basks in Mrs Cronk's gratitude. What a tosser! Louisa gives him a piece of her mind before heading back to Portwenn in a taxi with Martin.

Just when we think Martin and Louisa are going to take their tentative 'relationship' somewhere,Martin ruins the mood by suggesting that Louisa has a breath problem and Martin ends up walking the rest of the way home! Sadly, this will be the first of many clangers that Martin drops in Louisa's presence and viewers are left frustrated at the couples ability to torpedo a potentially pleasant romantic encounter.

In spite of this, the first of many hitches in the lives and loves of the doctor and the school teacher,Martin remains a likeable and caring, yet ultimately flawed, individual.moreless
