  • This episode introduces us to two complex & troubled chracters in Stewart James, the local Park Ranger, and Peter Cronk,a young schoolboy who has no trouble speaking his mind. And P.C Mylow is convinced that size matters!moreless

While this isn't a particular favourite episode of mine,it is an integral one as far as plot & character development are concerned as Stewart & Peter will appear again in future episodes.

When Martin visits Stewart on Bodmin Moor he finds himself being introduced to the Park Ranger's imaginary friend Antony, who just happens to be a 6' squirrel! When Martin refuses to prescribe tranquilisers for Antony,Stewart comes to town & wreaks havoc.

Peter has been creating havoc of his own and eventually runs away after having been blamed for the damage that Stewart has caused.

Martin eventually prescribes some harmless vitamin tablets for Stewart who promises to seek professional help.Martin also persuades Peter to return home and feels there may be some sort of 'connection' between them that allows them to establish a kind of understanding. This will come in handy in the future.

Mark Mylow, meanwhile,is excited to be accompanying Louisa to the annual Portwenn Players dance and has been taking a course of Big Boy Enhancement Capsules to assist his performance. When Martin informs him that they are merely vitamins,Mark feels let down.Perhaps in more ways than one!

While not the best episode of the season,'The Portwenn Effect' does go some way in explaining the various quirks of some key characters.moreless
