  • Transition (or transhipment?)

    7.0
It stood to reason that the 'Doctor' series should follow the example of the original books and films, and move to the open sea. In this episode we witness the transition from St Swithin's to a maritime setting (although we still haven't seen the correct ship). The shift means the loss of some characters, Paul Collier and Lawrence Bingham, presumably because the ship will provide new sidekicks and antagonists. (It may also have to do with the fact that George Layton spent more time writing, and Richard O'Sullivan had his own series, Man About The House.)

As a transitional episode it works quite well. It even fools the viewers in taking an interest in characters that turn out to be cameo performances. (Sandra Dickinson and Christopher Biggins were familiar faces. Yet, their roles are limited to a few lines.) At the end of the episode we still don't know much about the actual set-up of Docter At Sea.moreless
