  • Comedy at break-neck speed, ... well, at least for the seventies.

This Layton & Lynne-penned episode shows that the large cast of characters at St Swithin's lent itself perfectly to complicated farces. Short scenes, well-timed gags and lots of great lines make this one of the better episodes of this season. Every character serves a function, even some secondary ones. Joan Benham is the quiet one amidst the St Swithin's storm. Her reserved, understated humour, which she would go on to show again in Upstairs Downstairs, gives the programme a very British flavour in a French farce. Bingham plays a smaller role but each of his lines is a classic. Remarkable how a great character grew this way.moreless
