The Master Villain
steamheaduk

So, this weekend we will have our first story to see one Master face off against another incarnation in Season 10’s finale. We’ve seen it with Doctors, but never with different Master’s, at least not on screen anyway, so you would hope we’ll be in for a treat.

But who is the Master and what do we know about him/her? Get ready for the season finale, spoiler free, by catching up on the Master’s back story. Read on...

Dr Who - 'World Enough and Time' Review - Holy Heck - What a Cliff-Hanger!
Well, the penultimate Dr Who of this current season has aired and what a cliff-hanger! My initial tweet after seeing the show was along the lines of ‘Holy C***!’

And that wasn’t because of the very odd episode title …. The episode was a doozie!

I’m now not sure whether to believe Capaldi’s Doctor will regenerate at the end of this series, whether he’ll change next week, or whether that whole pre-credits scene will play out at the very end of next week’s finale and be continued in the Christmas episode.
I’ll quickly run through the story. The Tardis lands on a 400-mile-long colonisation ship with numerous floors each apparently representing some kind of environment, by the look of it. The ship had sent out a distress signal and the Doctor wants to use this as a test for Missy, to see how she can ...

The Time War Rages On - Return of the War Master
Though we mourned the loss of Sir John Hurt earlier this year, and quite possibly with him the end of any more Big Finish Time War stories, it may have seemed like the end, but the moment had been prepared for.

Another Knight of the Realm is about to join the Time War.

Dr Who - The Eaters of Light Review
With two episodes now left of this season, The Eaters of Light gave us a monster of the week story, with one or two foreshadows of what is to come.

It’s a very simple story that touched on a number of things such as the origins of local legends, war, a discussion on cowardice and bravery, how two opposing sides sometimes need to come together in order to defeat a bigger enemy, a nod to LGBTQ Pride month and even, believe it or not, the reason why crows always say ‘Kar’.

The pre-credits scene shows a brother and sister exploring a stone circle in Scotland with a local legend about ghosts and mysterious music that plays. Just as the annoyed (Or annoying) brother is drawing his sister away she runs back as she hears the music. A crow lands nearby and sounds like it’s saying ‘Doctor’. A design ...

An abundance of agendas! Dr Who - 'Empress of Mars' Review
After the three-part story of the last three weeks, featuring the Monks, we get back to a ‘Monster of the Week’ episode of Doctor Who. And it’s none other than our old ‘friends’ the Ice Warriors.

It’s more a story about agendas, as most of the characters seem to have one, but it’s enjoyable. We also get a little bit of mystery in an event that means Missy gets out of the vault.

Anyway. NASA is waiting for a Mars probe to send back pictures, using a camera that will see below the ice caps of the Martian poles, and the Doctor, Nardole and Bill are there to enjoy the spectacle. When the images come in, however, they see a message written in rocks saying, ‘God Save the Queen’.

Intriguing, and just the kind of thing that spurs an adventure.

The Tardis arrives on Mars in 1881 ...

Mum saves the day! 'The Lie of the Land' - Dr Who Review
This is going to be a slightly shorter review this week.

We have had the end of the three part story surrounding the Monks and this has led us onto what I think is going to be the story taking us through to the end of the season and, apparently, Peter Capaldi’s last episode.

The story is very basic and runs very quickly but it gives us a little insight into the characters of Bill and Missy, and their complexities.

It’s been 6 months since Bill asked for help and the Monks are in control of the world. Anyone who attempts to prove that the Monks have not been ‘mentoring’ the human race since it began, is arrested by the ‘Memory Police’ for spreading propaganda and, in extreme cases, is executed.

Bill spends her time hanging onto her real memories by talking with her mother, or an ‘invisible ...

Hidden History 10.2 - Pilots & Smiles
The Hidden History series of articles don’t review the episodes, or even outline the plot (though they might give things away), what these articles are for is to show you the depth of continuity woven into the stories, to see how each new story relates back to previous episodes in the recent and long distant past of Doctor Who.

The 2 Christmas episodes were dealt with in Part 1, and boy what a lot of hidden history we had in those 2 stories. Now to deal with Season 10 for real, to look at what the story was behind the story of the first 2 episodes The Pilot and Smile.

'The Pyramid at the End of the World' - Dr Who Review
We have a three-part story! This is something that hasn’t happened in Dr Who for a while and kind of takes me back to the multiple storylines of the old (Pre-reboot) series where you would have multiple episode storylines. I have a feeling this will lead onto Missy, who appears in the preview for the next episode, and she will then carry the show through, as big bad, to the season end.

This week’s episode, which has a title longer than one word (Which in itself is a surprise for this series!), follows on from last week where we discovered the Doctor, Bill and everyone they knew were just self-aware holographic representations of their real life counterparts, being used in a world invasion ‘simulator’.

It's a very much self-contained story. We start with Bill just not getting that successful date with her friend Penny. If it last ...

Hidden History of Season 10 - Part 1
After the Hidden History of Season 9 showing an unexpected swarm of continuity references, it looks like Peter Capaldi’s Swan Song season is also going to be full of hidden references to previous episodes of both 20th and 21st Century versions of the show. We already know from the trailers that we are going to at least see Ice Warriors, Movellans, Daleks and Mondasian Cybermen from The Tenth Planet (1966), the original cloth faced version of the Doctor’s old adversary. There are also strong rumours that Capaldi’s final episode will be woven into the fabric of an earlier episode, with some much earlier faces returning, so I think it’s time to start a new series of Hidden History for season 10.

To the Extremis! Dr Who - 'Extremis' Review
Episode six of Dr Who brings us the first part of that main story arc that has been developing and also gives its own viewpoint on a science fiction idea that has been used a few times before. It also brings us, what the producers previously referred to as ‘The Monks’, creatures that look like mummified people.

There are two stories here and we’ll briefly explain the main one first, which continues next week. The first important thing to note (which joins he two stories) is the end of the pre-credit sequence where the Doctor, using his sonic sunglasses as an aid to cope with the blindness he suffered last week, receives an email on them entitled ‘Extremis’.

Anyway, back to that main story. Basically, the Pope (Yes. His Holiness) and his entourage pay a visit to the Doctor (Yes, you’ll have to suspend your disbelief that the ...

"I'm the Doctor, run for your life!"

A UK television staple, Doctor Who was revamped for the 21st century by the BBC, bringing the show back in 2005 after its cancellation in 1989. The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) came and conquered but died saving the universe and his companions from the cursed Daleks. Regenerating for the ninth time, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) brought more secrets and dark sides of this universe. Past, Present, Future and beyond! After regenerating to once again save the life of a trusted companion, the Doctor (Matt Smith) is now on his eleventh incarnation. With new friends Amy Pond (Karen Gillian) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), a newly revamped TARDIS inside and out, the Doctor is ready for more adventures in time and space. The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) regenerated to become the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi).
