We have a three-part story! This is something that hasn't happened in Dr Who for a while and kind of takes me back to the multiple storylines of the old (Pre-reboot) series where you would have multiple episode storylines. I have a feeling this will lead onto Missy, who appears in the preview for the next episode, and she wi...

To the Extremis! Dr Who - 'Extremis' Review
Episode six of Dr Who brings us the first part of that main story arc that has been developing and also gives its own viewpoint on a science fiction idea that has been used a few times before. It also brings us, what the producers previously referred to as ‘The Monks’, creatures that look like mummified people.

There are two stories here and we’ll briefly explain the main one first, which continues next week. The first important thing to note (which joins he two stories) is the end of the pre-credit sequence where the Doctor, using his sonic sunglasses as an aid to cope with the blindness he suffered last week, receives an email on them entitled ‘Extremis’.

Anyway, back to that main story. Basically, the Pope (Yes. His Holiness) and his entourage pay a visit to the Doctor (Yes, you’ll have to suspend your disbelief that the ...

Hidden History of Season 10 - Part 1
After the Hidden History of Season 9 showing an unexpected swarm of continuity references, it looks like Peter Capaldi’s Swan Song season is also going to be full of hidden references to previous episodes of both 20th and 21st Century versions of the show. We already know from the trailers that we are going to at least see Ice Warriors, Movellans, Daleks and Mondasian Cybermen from The Tenth Planet (1966), the original cloth faced version of the Doctor’s old adversary. There are also strong rumours that Capaldi’s final episode will be woven into the fabric of an earlier episode, with some much earlier faces returning, so I think it’s time to start a new series of Hidden History for season 10.

Dr Who - 'Oxygen' Review
After being a little disappointed with last week’s episode, this week we got straight back into good old Science Fiction with a claustrophobic story with more than one nod to social commentary (Which Dr Who tends to demonstrate interesting viewpoints on) and it was a pretty good story.

Anyway. This week’s story involves the survivors of a mining station running out of air whilst trying avoid zombies ….. or are they? Just the kind of mystery the Doctor likes. This is also the first-time Bill realises just how dangerous travelling with the Doctor can be!

As we’ve seen on some previous season episodes, the post opening credits scene sets some of the scientific basis for the story, and this is done here, by the Doctor giving a lecture on how space can kill you. He goes into some graphic detail on how the lack of pressure in space ...

Dr Who - 'Knock, Knock' - Good but not the best
This week’s ‘review’ is more of a run through with a few thoughts on the episode.

The episode wasn’t too bad. It was a relatively good ‘monster of the week’ story with the usual Dr Who twist of having an emotional reason behind the wrongdoing, which doesn’t actually excuse what the antagonists were doing, but highlights how the fear of losing a loving parent when we’re young can drive people to avoid that at all costs. But, having said that, it wasn’t the best of the bunch but then you always have some episodes that aren’t as good as others.

But let’s start at the beginning. Bill and five friends form the university are looking at a house share. Now, I’m assuming that at least some of the students know Bill from the fact that she was piggy backing on the Doctor ...

Dr Who - 'Thin Ice' Review
Dr Who appears to be following its regular pattern. We have the introduction episode, then we shoot into the future and then the third episode takes us back to the past. Not a crime, but it does make it somewhat predictable.

This episode was a typical ‘monster of the week’ episode where, as is usual in Dr Who, the monster isn’t really a monster but turns out to be a misunderstood victim of human greed. The monster story was really just a vehicle to carry along an in-depth conversation between Bill and the Doctor as she attempts to understand more about him and he attempts to remain in a teacher/student partnership without opening up too much (Something he appears to realise has been a mistake in the past). However, we all know that Bill will eventually find out about the Time War, Gallifrey, the billions of skeletons that ...

Hello Billie - Dr Who 'The Pilot' Review
The Doctor is back and a with new travelling companion!

At long last Dr Who made it back onto UK screens on Saturday night, for a new series, and I wasn’t disappointed.

I’m hoping, as this is to be Capaldi’s final series as the Doctor, that it’s going to be a good one. The last series had some great episodes which basically centred the story arc around the fact that Jenna Coleman’s character, Clara, was leaving. If they follow this formula then we could be in for a great series.

This episode was, fittingly, called the Pilot. This, as well as referring to the story itself, could be alluding to a fresh start for the show and there are a few reasons, mentioned later, that point to this.

The story was good. With only 50 minutes to tell the story, the show employed some of ...

There's probably not any duds
So on Sunday I had the great fortune to be invited to the BFI Doctor Who panel at the London Southbank iMax, by Sylvester McCoy’s “minder” (oh the stories I've heard). Essentially my invite was a cunning ploy to make me donate to Sylvester’s upcoming play “A Joke”, but I didn’t mind.

We settled down to excellent central seats, the lights went down, and the treats began.

What follows contains descriptions of some scenes from the opening episode, and some vague hints as to what to expect. Not spoilers as such, so unless you want to know nothing at all, read on…

Smile Please! Dr Who 'Smile' Review
Smile please!

In true Doctor Who tradition, Smile was the episode that allows both the Doctor and a new partner to bond, each showing the other what they can do, and maybe testing each other a little. It’s also the one that begins with the Doctor giving his new companion a choice of where their first trip should be. This is, as always, the Doctor showing off a little to impress.

Billie chose the future, because she wants to see if it’s happy and so they arrive on another world with a city that is to be colonised by humans but is currently populated by tiny ‘microbots’ that use larger robots as interfaces to the humans they work for.

The interesting thing is the robots and humans communicate through the language of emoji and use an emoji ‘badge’ which adheres to the wearer’s back and is only ...

"I'm the Doctor, run for your life!"

A UK television staple, Doctor Who was revamped for the 21st century by the BBC, bringing the show back in 2005 after its cancellation in 1989. The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) came and conquered but died saving the universe and his companions from the cursed Daleks. Regenerating for the ninth time, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) brought more secrets and dark sides of this universe. Past, Present, Future and beyond! After regenerating to once again save the life of a trusted companion, the Doctor (Matt Smith) is now on his eleventh incarnation. With new friends Amy Pond (Karen Gillian) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), a newly revamped TARDIS inside and out, the Doctor is ready for more adventures in time and space. The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) regenerated to become the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi).
