This was such a strange episode, very reminiscent of Classic Doctor Who, late '80s. This episode is one of the few where I sorta' like Matt Smith's Doctor. I really liked how they explained Clara. And the "scar" that was the Doctor's timeline is too cool a concept. I could tell that the Doctor could see River, but I loved how he could actually touch her. But that scary "war" Doctor, he's the one who really intrigues me.

Great episode. For a second I thought his name was 'Please' :)

I thought something similar : "The TARDIS only lets you in if you're polite and ask "please" !"How ironic would that have been ?

Holy sh**, I don't even have words for this one. My apologies to Moffat for doubting his genious (even though it was kinda hard to see in between). I only hope he didn't do to River what I think just happened. But there's not gonna be spoilers for once, since I'm actually speechless for now...

I don't know if I loved it. Like much of the rest of this season it felt extremely rushed, to the detriment of the more emotional beats. That said, it does have a hell of an ending.

OBVIOUS folks... the one place he can never go is the 'Fields of Elsenore, where the 11th will Fall'... the place The Silence has been working to keep him from. 'Silence will fall when the name is spoken.' He will be asked his name in a place where no one can resist answering. This is the fulfillment of the plot that began when they went back to NASA in the 60s and The Silence hunted them.

Trenzalore, not Elsenore

My prediction: The reveal of The Doctor's true name will be to River Song, not to the audience. She's already revealed that he didn't actually tell her his name during "The Wedding..." episode, but was merely cluing her into the fact that she wouldn't actually be killing him. But when she meets Tennant in "Silence in the Library" she convinces him of her authenticity by revealing to him that she knows his real name. The location The Doctor wishes to avoid is the Singing Towers of Darillium, which is the last place he was with River before she encounters Tennant and ultimately dies. Thus, he must reveal his name to her and somehow provide her with a Mark VI sonic screwdriver so that she'll be prepared for The Library. Since Tennant has been confirmed for the 50th anniversary, I suspect he'll have an uncredited cameo appearance at the end of this upcoming finale (she did tell him he "showed up on [her] doorstep with a new haircut and a suit." Obviously, Tennant's hair vs. Smith's hair would constitute a "new haircut," and Tennant's main "look" was the blue or brown suit). So, I'm guessing we'll be saying a sad farewell to dear, River Song with this upcoming finale... Or maybe I've just got this all mixed up!

Have either of you watched the "Three Doctors" or the "Five Doctors" if the River Song is with the 11th Doctor when the 10th Doctor is moved into his proceeding incarnation he can meet her. When the return to their own timelines the younger incarnations of the Doctor always forget having met their younger self, as well as those that were with them in that timeline. It is a timey wimey thing that they used three times in the 1970s and 80s.

no ... i think its going to be deeper than that ... The one place he can never go could be Gallifrey or into the Time War OR and this is my own theory ... The Medusa Cascade ... the soothsayer in Fires of Pompeii stated that his name is lost in the Cascade of medusa herself ... So my thought is the doctor used his name to seal the time rift from the medusa cascade ... if you watch all the episodes they all seem to subtly hint towards it ... especially the ones with tennant. I think the main antagonist is likely to be the great Intelligence or since, with clara at least, they have been kicking back in to Classic style doctor who, It might be someone like Omega or the Master or Rassilon.

I like your thinking. It would be a fantastic 'full circle' ending to the River Song saga that began with Silence in the Library. Only one problem though... River would not be able to meet David Tennant's Doctor Who because at the time he was hanging out with Rose (who I believe will appear in the 50th anniversary show) he had not yet met River. Or am I missing a 'timey wimey' trick? (LOL)

What if the 10th Doctor who is returning isn't the "actual" 10th doctor that meets River in the Library? After all, Rose is supposed to be stuck in the alternate dimension with the half-human 10th Doctor meta-crisis thing-a-ma-bob. But the meta-crisis occurred at the end of the Donna Noble story arc, so the meta-crisis Doctor has all the memories of the actual Doctor up to that point (meaning he'll remember meeting River Song in the library, and he'll realize the importance of their meeting again). This would also be a clever way for them to explain Tennant's changed appearance since the meta-crisis Doctor ages at the same rate as a normal human. Anywho, this would allow a "Doctor" and Rose to both be pulled into an episode, yet still have knowledge from beyond the original Doctor/Rose story arc... How's that for some Timey Wimey thinking?

Yes indeed. It would also explain nicely why David Tennant and Matt Smith can appear together in one time and place without having to even bring time travel into the equation. Anyway... 3 more weeks and all will be revealed.

Will the one place he can never go be the end of the Time War?

maybe "fall of the eleventh" is a red Herring, and doesn't mean what we're assuming it means ? maybe the Doctor has serious problems once his name is revealed, but doesn't die/regenerate ?

Or, he could simply trip over a root and fall... ;-)

Yes... There is always that! :D

Or they could find a way to weasel their way out of it, as with "The Wedding of River Song."

I will probably be the Fields of Trenzalore
