Revealing Mistake When the Dalek falls off the Mary Celeste, the casing opens to reveal an empty shell.
Equipment Visible: At the very beginning, the shadow of the boom mike moves across the TARDIS console.
Ian: Hey, I wonder how those Mire Beasts are enjoying that Dalek, eh? A bit gritty?
The Doctor: Oh, I don't know. I should think a little, ah… pate de Dalek to a Mire Beast might be quite palatable.
From this episode through to the end of the serial, Dalek models from the film Doctor Who and the Daleks are used, strictly in background appearances (so as not to highlight the differences between them and those used in the TV series).
Peter Purves, who plays Morton Dill (the Alabama cowboy) would return as Steven Taylor in The Planet of Decision (episode 6 of this serial).
The sailing ship, whose crew is scared into jumping overboard by the appearance of the Dalek time machine, is revealed to be the Mary Celeste. This was the ghost ship, found off the coast of Portugal in December 1872, and made famous by Arthur Conan Doyle's story of the fictional Marie Celeste, which is found intact, with the crew's breakfast cooking and their tea still hot. This episode provides an explanation for the mysterious scratch marks on the railing (made by a Dalek falling overboard) as well as the fate of the crew and the captain's wife and baby daughter, all seen jumping overboard in panic at the sight of the Daleks.
