I'm not talking about like withRory who seem to be killed every 4 episodes and comes back to life. I'm thinking more of the ones killed and stayed killed. I have in The Dalek's Master Plan Katarina & Sara Kingdom. Earthshock Adric. This is all I could come up with.

There have only been 3 human/humanlike companions that have died in the original series, Sara Kingdom, Katarina, and Adric. There is some debate as to whether Sara was actually a companion since she wasn't written to be one and she's not listed as such on the BBC website, so that one is still in the air. The other being that dies after travelling with The Doctor is Kameleon, who is listed on the BBC site as a companion as well as a version of K9, though that one may also fall under debateable, not because he isn't a companion, he is, but because just like The Doctor he keeps coming back.

    In answer to how many he's had, here they are;

    Susan Foreman (Carole Anne Ford)

    Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill)

    Ian Chesterton (William Russell)

    Vicki (Maureen O'Brien)

    Steven Taylor (Peter Purves)

    Katarina (Adrienne Hill)

    Dorothea Chaplet/Dodo (Jackie Lane)

    Ben Jackson (Michael Craze)

    Polly (Anneke Wills)

    Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines)

    Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling)

    Zoe Herriot (Wendy Padbury)

    Sergeant Benton (John Levene)

Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney)

    Captain Mike Yates (Richard Franklin)

    Elizabeth "Liz" Shaw (Caroline John)

    Jo Grant (Katy Manning)

    Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen)

    Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter)

    Leela (Louise Jameson)

    K9 (John Leeson/David Brierley - voice)

    Romana I (Mary Tamm)

    Romana II (Lalla Ward)

    Adric (Matthew Waterhouse)

    Nyssa (Sarah Sutton)

    Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding)

    Vislor Turlough (Mark Strickson)

    Kamelion (Gerald Flood - voice)

    Perpugilliam "Peri" Brown (Nicola Bryant)

    Melanie "Mel" (Bonnie Langford)

    Ace (Sophie Aldred)

    Dr Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook)

There is some debate about Mike, since he never travelled in the TARDIS and that is considered to be one of the hallmarks of the Companion role, but then again, technical neither did Liz and there is no doubt about her status.

that's what 32. i do count Sara kingdom so that's 33. really cause i've read she was going to be a companion originally but since she was from the future i believe. & they had a hard time doing that with i forget what character Vick i think? they decided not to. so they killed her off.

honestly that was a pretty bold move to kill a companion officaly or not off back than. i'll give them the credit for doing that. also counting the current version. that's what damn near 40 companions now isn't it?

If you listen to Peter Purves on some of the DVD commentary and the Lost Episodes CD pack commentary the cast and crew was lead to believe that Katarina was going to be a long time companion and then after 0nly 5 episodes (the fewest by a companion I believe) she was replaced by Sara Kingdom and again the cast and crew was lead to believe that she was to be a long term companion. He stated that they were never given a reason for either one being killed off so soon.

Based on what Peter Purves has stated I do count Sara Kingdom. I don't count Dr. Hollaway. She was in one story and did not leave with the Doctor at the end. Mike Tates did travelled with the 4th Doctor in the Hornets' Nest which is a very good audio adventures. I know some don't count them but I do as long as they use one of the 11TVDoctor. I still don't countRichard E. Grant thou some do. I wish someone could put everything down officially so we would know who was Who.

which one was katrinia? it's been awhile since i last saw that those serials. i can't recall what i read about katrina, but when it comes to sara kingdom i hear the reason was as you have as well, that the reason she was killed off, was cuz they already had their companion from the future Steven! and i think katrina was from the past or something? i forget which one she actually was to be honest. i don't have those cd's actually.

She was in the Myth Makers and helped Steven to the TRDIS when he was hurted at the fall of Troy. She was killed in the Daleks' Master Plan. Of all the companions I time she had the shortest time with the Doctor.

I wonder if fans out cry had anything to do with the amount of time that pasted before another companion die?Two in one story would be hard to deal with even in today times.

At the time many in my area knew nothing about the 1st two and when Adric was blow up I just sat there for about 30 mins trying to see how next week they were going to bring him back. When they didn't !

Unfortunately Matthew Waterhouse hasn't contributed to those.
