  • The Doctor defeats the Mara...

The idea of an evil force being hidden in most people - only to come out when the time is right is a great one. And watching Tegan initially struggle with this force - only to succumb to its power is good. But then the idea falls flat. The characters of Sanders and Hindle are completely unbelievable and Aris isn't any good either. There are too many plot holes, what happened to the missing men, did Tegan really sleep in the forest for 2 days without anyone checking on her, Adric acts intelligent and stupid in different scenes, the Doctor says its the end of everything when given a vision - really? And watching Hindle and Sanders cut cardboard figures in a scene is childish in the extreme! And finally the Mara rises as a giant rubber snake - very disappointing. Its one of those stories that look good on paper - but on TV looks ridiculous and painful to watch.moreless
  • Good stuff

(This is a review of all the episodes of the four part Kinda)

Kinda is considered by many to be the first classic of Peter Davidson's tenure as Doctor Who. One of the main reasons for Kinda's success is the cliffhangers. The 'what's in the box' ending of episode two is genuinely very frightening and a fantastic lead in to ep three.

My only beef with this story is the poor production quality of the snake in the final part. Season 21 story The Caves of Androzani, widely considered by fans to be the finest Davison outing, also suffered a similar problem regarding the quality of its prop beasts.

The cast are very good, with Davison on top form as the Doctor. Simon Rouse brings an interesting child like naivety to the increasingly insane character Hindle, making what could have been a scene chewing baddie into something altogether more believable.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • Equipment Visible: When the Doctor and Todd are talking at the end of the episode, the cut-off tops of some trees can be seen.

    • The original cut of this episode ran short, requiring the shooting of additional "padding" scenes months later, in the form of the Adric-Tegan scene after Hindle opens the box and some extra shots when the Mara is being attacked. This is noticeable in some discontinuities in the dome set, actors' hair, Tegan's earrings and the coloration on the mirror edges.

    • Plot Hole: It is never explained what happened to the other vanished members of the expedition.

    • Revealing Mistakes: When the Kinda surround Aris with mirrors, there is an obvious gap at the lower left for the camera to dolly in and out.
