Doctor Who (1963)

Season 11 Episode 26

Planet of the Spiders, Part Six

Aired Saturday 5:15 PM Jun 08, 1974 on BBC

  • Trivia

    • No acting involved here. At the very end of Part Six, when they were filming the Doctor's regeneration scene, Elisabeth Sladen is not acting: she is really crying when Sarah begs the Doctor not to die.

    • Equipment Visible: When the spiders are dying, a shot of Arak and Tuar reveals a BBC camera in the lower right corner.

    • Unusually, the reprise of the previous episode's final events is slightly altered: The sequence where Sarah Jane is revealed to be under the Eight Legs' has been spliced between scenes.

  • Quotes

    • Brigadier: Aren't you going to introduce me to your friend, Miss Smith?
Sarah: Oh, um, yes. This is the abbot of… No, it's Cho-je… I mean, it looks like Cho-je, but it's really K'anpo Rimpoche. I think.
Brigadier [ sarcastically ]: Thank you. That makes everything quite clear.

    • The Brigadier: Well... here we go again.

    • [The Third Doctor's last words]
The Doctor: A tear, Sarah Jane? No, no, don't cry. While there's life, there's...

  • Notes

    • Harry Sullivan is mentioned briefly here at the end, but is not seen until the next episode.

    • The Doctor explains the regeneration process to Sarah. This is the first time that the term is used: the First Doctor was "renewed", the Second was sentenced to a change of appearance.

This is the first time that we see another Time Lord - K'anpo Rimpoche - regenerated.

It is established that a projection of a Time Lord's future incarnation can exist alongside his present one: Cho-je was a distillation of K'anpo Rimpoche's future incarnation. See also Season 18's Logopolis.

    • The Doctor is poisoned by the radiation in the Great One's mountain lair and is forced to regenerate again.

    • Final regular appearances of Jon Pertwee as the Doctor and Richard Franklin as Mike Yates. Both appear next in The Five Doctors.
