  • The Doctor and companions learn that they are aboard the ship Terminus where Leprosy carriers go to die.

    8.5
Continuing with this memorable storyline, the Doctor and companions following the cliffhanger of the last episode learn that they are on board the death ship Terminus where Leprosy carriers are left to die.

At first the Doctor, the raiders, and companions think they are along on the ship with a computer at control. As episode progresses we see that the ship has armed guards. The guards are essentially the caretakers of the ship making sure that the disease carrying individuals are quarantined and set aside to die. However, compounding that issue is the fact there's a radiation leak on the ship that's killing everyone. We see Nyssa is the first one to show signs of sickness. Nyssa is eventually taken away and put with all the people left to die.

This is an entertaining but dark episode. This whole storyline is about lingering death and sickness and how in this world, the sick ones are not even treated, they are basically set aside to die.

The guards are also sick, but they have developed a special drug to counter the effects of the sickness for the time being.

This is a memorable episode basically detailing one facet of dealing with sickness back in the day which was to basically take whoever is carrying a disease and leave them in one area to die.

The episode moves very quickly and ends in a realistic cliffhanger with the Doctor fighting for his life.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Revealing Mistake: As the Doctor and Kari walk across a grating, the camera pans down to reveal Valgard, then over as he follows them. As it does, a foot appears briefly on a stairway in the upper left corner of the screen. This has been crudely matted over. However, the matting only makes it look like a patch of stairway appears in midair, then moves to cover the foot.

    • Plot Hole: Nyssa claims that since there are two ways to get from the control room to the TARDIS, they must go in two parties. This makes absolutely no sense and is an obvious excuse to split up the characters.

    • Plot Hole: The Doctor claims that Terminus is at the center of the Universe. The Universe has no centre: this was known in 1983.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • The Doctor: There's something very strange about this.
      Olvir: What?
The Doctor: Well, it could be pure coincidence, but Terminus seems to be at the exact centre of the universe.

    • Black Guardian: The Doctor still lives. You know the rewards for success, I have other rewards for your failure.

  • NOTES (2)

    • In interviews, Sarah Sutton claimed that the infamous skirt-dropping was a "parting gift" to her fans who had complained about her being too covered-up.

    • The story was criticised for fostering prejudice against leprosy sufferers. The disease in the story is named Lazar's Disease, an ancient name for leprosy.
