    • TRIVIA (2)

      • This story illustrates that Tom Baker was wrong about the Doctor not needing a companion. It would have been more believable for the Doctor to know who Rassilon was and then explain it to a companion than for him to need the Time Lords to explain to him.

      • The Doctor claims not to know anything about Rassilon and asks to hear an archive summary. It is odd that he should have forgotten such an important figure in Time Lord history: in The Five Doctors, all three of his earlier incarnations seem to have a pretty good knowledge of Rassilon, even knowing that the tower in the Death Zone is Rassilon's tomb.

    • QUOTES (9)

      • Engin: What about his character?
        The Doctor: Bad.
Engin: Oh, Doctor, could you please be a little more specific.
The Doctor: Yes. He was evil, cunning, and resourceful. Highly developed powers of ESP and a formidable hypnotist.

      • The Doctor: The Master is consumed with hatred. It's his one great weakness.
The Master: Weakness, Doctor? Hate is strength.
The Doctor: Not in your case. You'd delay an execution to pull the wings off a fly.

      • Spandrell: I chose you for this special mission because he's already dead. You're unlikely to miss him.
        Hilred: Yes, sir.

      • The Doctor: Do you mind? This is a non-smoking compartment.

      • The Doctor: "Only in mathematics will we find truth."
        Spandrell: What?
The Doctor: Borusa used to say that during my time at the Academy, and now he's setting out to prove it.

      • Borusa: If heroes don't exist, it is necessary to invent them - good for public morale.

      • The Doctor: I can feel my hair curling...and either that means it's going to rain...or I'm onto something.

      • The Doctor: No answer to a straight question - typical politician.

      • The Doctor: Well, you'll just have to adjust the truth again, Cardinal. What about subsidence owing to a plague of mice?
Borusa: As I believe I told you long ago, Doctor, you will never amount to anything in the galaxy while you retain your propensity for vulgar facetiousness.
The Doctor: Yes, sir. You said that many times, sir. May I go, sir?
Borusa: Certainly you may, preferable with the utmost expedition.

    • NOTES (1)

      • For the first time we learn a Time Lord can regenerate only twelve times before finally dying. The Master plans to use the Eye of Harmony to generate the colossal amount of energy need to renew his regenerative cycle. See also The Five Doctors.
