Clent tells the Doctor that the Ice Age came about because of a shortage of plantlife. Since the plants were not around to create CO2, the planet cooled. In fact, the opposite is true. Plants consume carbon dioxide and the lack of them would mean more in the air and higher temperatures (the greenhouse effect).
