  • The Cybermen in perhaps their best outing & a preview of things to come in the series as a whole.

This was the series only 8 part story (making it the 3rd or 4th longest). Althought long, it doesn't drag like so many 7 or 6 parters do. The recent DVD release does an excellent job of giving us part 1 and 4 back as close as we can get them. Hope they do all of the missing episodes this way. This was the first appearence of UNIT and a test run of how the early 70s would be, the Doctor stuck on Earth helping fight alien invasions & the like with his military friends. Lethbridge-Stewart is back (the earliest existing footage of him as his part in Web of Fear is sadly missing) & we see Benton for the first time. Plenty of high tech action with international cooperation (oh for those innocent times again!). Tobias Vaughn made for a great villain, he out does the Cybermen. They are used sparringly like the Daleks in Genesis of the Daleks, which is a good thing. Their moment of invasion is fantastic. The use of emotion to kill them is much better than the gold idea of later Cybermen appearences. The new show reused it in The Age of Steel. The mini-skirted girls date the program but nice to see some proto-feminism from Isobel. No thought of covering up the events, she says she got a photographer job from her pictures of the dead Cybermen!!! Guess people have short memories of alien invasions as no one is expecting them in later UNIT stories.
