The Doctor (pointing): “Trafalgar Square’s that way.”

The first two-parter for many years begins with a first episode mainly concerned with tension building. The fact that the entire thing is shot on location is a huge change, and a well-deserved breath of fresh air for Doctor Who, as it gets away from the interminable corridors and three-walled sets. Tom Baker is great here, as are Ian Marter and Elisabeth Sladen. The human crash survivors are also played decently. Design-wise, the Sontaran spaceship is as good as ever – and also a wonderful act of juxtaposition against the surrounding countryside. Sarah Jane’s yellow anorak and the Sontaran’s robot are the only faults, the latter unfortunately resembling something from Blake’s 7.moreless
