  • The Tenth Planet is the last series with Hartnell as the Doctor, and it is the first appearance of the Cybermen. The Doctor and his companions materialize at a research base at the South Pole that coordinates space operations.moreless

Early Doctor Who has very odd pacing. The acting is done well enough, but it is not nearly as refined as any show on television today. Modern viewers will no doubt need to apply themselves to maintain focus. Even though this series is the last Hartnell series, he isn't written as a main role in the scripts. There are a few plot holes in this series, and as I mentioned before the pacing is something to get used to.

I enjoy being able to let go of my internal demand for flawless effects and realism whenever I watch Doctor Who. That being said, the costumes, props and effects are very primitive in this series.moreless

    • Ben: Hey, come on Doctor, wakey wakey! It's all over now.
The Doctor: What did you say, my boy? "It's all over." "It's all over." That's what you said. No... But it isn't all over. It's far from being all over.
Ben: What are you talking about?
The Doctor: I must get back to the TARDIS. Immediately!

    • Polly: What's happened to you, Doctor?
The Doctor: Oh, I'm not sure my dear. Comes from an outside influence. Unless this old body of mine is wearing a bit thin.
Polly: What do you mean, "wearing a bit thin"?
The Doctor: Oh, don't worry child, don't worry, don't worry...

  • NOTES (5)

    • DVD: Clips from this episode are included in the Doctor Who: Lost in Time DVD set (BBCDVD 1353, Warner Home Video E2083) released in November 2004. A DVD of the three surviving episodes, with an animated version of the fourth episode, was released in June 2013.

    • William Hartnell would later reprise the role of the Doctor in The Three Doctors.

    • The production team had envisaged Hartnell's Doctor collapsing to the floor with his cloak covering his face, with the cloak being removed to reveal Patrick Troughton in the next episode. In the event, vision mixer Shirley Coward was able to produce a transition effect.

    • This was the first episode to feature the renewal of the Doctor: the term 'regeneration' was not used until Planet of the Spiders. With the departure of William Hartnell, the series no longer has any original cast members.

    • The master tape of this episode went missing after being loaned to Junior Points of View in 1966: the BBC has no copies in its archive. Some footage survives, in the form of the regeneration sequence (loaned to Blue Peter), some 8mm footage filmed from the TV screen, and the ubiquitous Australian censorship cuts.
