  • Underworld ends with a bang...

    5.0
This story has various disappointing elements that drag it down. The "cave" scenes are very disappointing with fake special effects - and various running scenes are used over and over. The characters of the slaves are not fleshed out at all - and are drably dressed. The Minoyans themselves are also fairly monotonous - saying over and over 'the quest is the quest'. And the guards are handicapped in their acting by wearing all-enclosing bulky costumes so you can't see their facial expressions. And yet again we have a mad-computer - which even has Tom Baker's Doctor saying in one scene "another mad/insane computer" - which reflects the recent story "The Face of Evil" has a similar storyline.moreless
  • a mediocre story but not as bad as some say...

    7.0
I think Tom Baker can make the worst story passable. Underworld has all the elements of a Hinchcliffe era story with the borrowing of someone else's story. here, however, they basically spell it out that yes, they clipped it. I like the concepts overall. Wish we'd heard more about Minyos and the Time Lords involvement there. That pacifier gun was neat, should have taken that outside the ship! I liked the shield guns too, makes sense to have some kind of defense for laser guns. Too bad they couldn't have gone to a cave to film the scenes on the P7E planet (like in Revenge of the Cybermen) since a studio set was too expensive but I suppose location filming was also out of the question. I don't think it looks that bad. Being a DW fan, I've seen plenty of bad FX so when one show gets dismissed as having bad FX, I say "duh!" Invasion of the Dinosaurs had awful dino puppets but the story almost made up for them. The tunnels are dark so that covers them a bit. The guards have not very interesting uniforms but some good voices. The Oracle is yet another mad computer. The story drags at times with the same shots reused. The whole part 3 cliffhanger was pretty much a waste of time that lead nowhere. But I still enjoyed it and say it's miles ahead of the bad shows of the 8os.moreless
